Wind Mobile says they use SIM cards too. See http://www.windmobile.ca/support/faq/#question-7

Yep, but they will not at this moment activate a sim-only account (if you bring over a phone from a different carrier), so for now you have to buy the phone, and if you want to switch phones, better hope that the phone supports 1700/2100mhz HSPA (very very few do, T-Mobile USA's weird 3G network is that). There was a story on another forum a few days ago.. this guy in Toronto activates a line with Wind, buys a Blackberry Bold, sells the Bold on eBay same day, puts the Wind SIM card in his Rogers branded Blackberry Bold, and sure enough the guy was stumped why he was roaming the entire time.. that Bold (the original) didn't have 1700/2100mhz HSPA support.

I really like the idea of Wind, Unlimited voice plans as low as $35-45/month, "Unlimited" data plans for fairly cheap, and no contract, also.. the phones are a decent price for being a carrier that has zero contracts.. $450 for a Bold? Rogers offers the same phone (Blackberry 9700) sans contract for $600! Heck my two most recent phones with Rogers have cost WELL over $450 WITH a three year contract (and that was through dealing with both Sales and Retentions)

Thankfully it was replaced with fiber optic cable within months and we had a real phone. Any guesses on what we'll be using to communicate with in another twenty years?

No clue about in twenty years... but we grew up with a party line and it was a pain. The house across the street was on fire and the "party line" didn't believe us, thought we were lying to get use of the phone line (they were on a call)... so said house burnt to the ground. I wonder if party lines exist anywhere in canada still?

For $500, you can buy a rotary cell phone. Needless to say, I don't have that much to spare.

For $500, you can get a Satellite phone which looks like it came directly out of the 90s! and have a few dollars in change left over to pay for a few months of service. Apparently satellite phone plans are fairly cheap now days
