Postby mrchristian on Wed Jan 21, 2009 5:31 pm

Effective today:

Canwest News Service Tuesday, January 20, 2009

A new Ontario law comes into effect Wednesday that makes it illegal to smoke in a motor vehicle in the presence of a child under age 16.

Another thing to had to the remember when file....

remember when you could smoke in the last three rows of class at uni ? Oh yeah, remember when you could smoke on hospital wards ? Oh yeah, remember when you could climb into your car, roll up the windows and puff away with bebe lying, unrestrained of course, in the seat next to you.

It is a wonder the human race didn't go extinct decades ago.

Good. Why haven't we banned smoking entirely yet?

We tried banning booze once. Didn't go over so well.

Drugs are banned. Most teens these days can get pot easier the liquor.

What would banning cigarettes really do for society?

It would tell society that smoking is not good for you?

It would drive up the price of an easily accessable product and make a larger market for organized crime to cash in on. That's probably about it. People know smoking is bad for you and the habit is slowly being phased out of society. May take a couple more generations but there probably won't be many smokers 50 years from now. Maybe not enough to sustain the industry.

People who smoke in cars with kids are plain and simple ignorant and selfish. How hard is it to wait and not expose kids to something that we all know isn't healthy? Just seems like common sense to not smoke around kids, the thing about common sense though is not everybody has it, or cares.

So how exactly is this intrusive, government knows best, ban supposed to be enforced? If I had kids in the car, I would be inclined to drive around with a white pen in my mouth.

The government should really get out of the business of enforcing the unenforceable. Show me the evidence where smoking in the car with kids creates a greater risk than smoking in the house. My dad smoked in the car, and I'm still walking around.

Education is the only way to reduce, and eventually eliminate, smoking.

When Manitoba passes a similiar law later this year, they better have an age limit that makes sense, like 14. If the age limit is too high, then what you get is this:

http://wiselaw.blogspot.com/2009/02/ontario-smoking-law-encounters-glitch.html

Now, in that example, I'd rather have read about the 15-year old lighting up inside the car. I'd like to know - is that illegal in Ontario? Kind of like how a 15-year old that does sexting of himself could face child pornography charges?

I found that link somewhere a long time ago, and, for the life of me, can't remember where. If it's from someone on New Winnipeg, I apologize! I've been very busy lately and have put some things, like posting on New Winnipeg, off for a long time.

It's a step in the right direction. Next step is to outlaw smoking in homes where children live.
