There are a couple of them here too, but they are in malls. The only standalone McDonalds arguably within walking distance of downtown is the one at Portage and Maryland.

Again, I'm not calling for more to be opened - just somewhat surprised that there aren't any street-level storefront outlets.

It is probably due to the fact that the mall food courts already do a good enough job servicing downtown Winnipeg.

I would venture to say that most of the casual dining and fast food places downtown do the majority of their business during weekday working hours.

So with an already saturated lunch service why would someone take the chance downtown just to pick up the odd customers from an MTS Centre event?

when the NHL arrives, 16000 people, 45 nights a year plus all the other events may justify it.

who here remembers running across st. james to the 2 level mcd's in between the periods at Jets games? I sure do!

Mcdonalds at the a&b sound location would probably resemble the Portage Place food court, not pretty. I bet they still have bad memories of their older downtown location across from the UofW, that place was a shithole which made the PP food court look like paradise in comparison.

There are some downtown but I think it's a stretch to say there are a lot.

It seems like our downtown suffers from a flurry of food court development in the late 70s and early 80s. We truly have a lot of fast food outlets, but they are limited by typical food court hours. Food courts are not really conducive to spontaneous late night snacking in downtown.

Shawarma is pretty similar to Donair. Usually chicken or beef on a spit done the same way as donair. There are two places in Winnipeg. One on Ellice and one on North Main. Both worth checking out. (though I prefer the one on North Main.) Shawarma is everywhere in Ottawa. Lots in Toronto too and (from what I've heard) Calgary.
