In Santa Barbra the owner has to come in to pay their taxes in person if you rent it out or if you are a foreigner. If there are any out standing issues they are brought up then . If you do not come to do it they place liens on the property within 48 hours so you cannot sell it out from under . Perhaps the city needs this here for landlords in other provinces .
These impulsive half breeds have got spoiled by this emote and must be kept down by a strong hand.Until they are swamped by the influx of settlers . Sir John A McDonald

News from the province:
Proposed legislation would enhance the City of Winnipeg's ability to deal with problem vacant and derelict buildings that can cause neighbourhood decline over time and extend this power to all municipalities, Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux announced today.
...
The proposed legislation would streamline the process Winnipeg must follow and would reduce overall timelines to redevelop and revitalize properties. At the same time, credit unions and banks that might have an interest in problem properties would continue to have the opportunity to take action to protect their investments.
Hopefully this will go through.

Yes, I wonder what is going on. Last year we heard the city had sold off derelict buildings for redevelopment. When was that? Still, at least one of these properties is barely changed.

The freep is now reporting:
Winnipeg’s authority to take title to vacant and derelict properties is unique in Canada. It asked for this authority in 2002 and now with several years of experience, has identified and asked for changes to the legislation to improve its effectiveness, said Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux in introducing Bill 3 Wednesday in the legislature. The Association of Manitoba Municipalities also asked for this same power to deal with vacant and derelict buildings.

The CBC reported that the City is vowing to "get tough" with landlords of derelict properties.

A lot of neighbourhoods are plagued with run-down vacant properties. However, the City doesn't have many tools at its disposal to deal with them. It's hard to track down the owners, some of whom live abroad, let alone to get the courts to force them out, even if they don't pay taxes.

The City really needs to ramp up it efforts in dealing with this problem. There are too many streets (especially high profile ones like Selkirk or Balmoral) which are pockmarked with boarded-up homes.

Any move to get these buildings dealt with is a good one IMO.
Normally, the city would issue a call for redevelopment plans first. But that has allowed some owners to step forward at the last minute and claim to be interested in fixing up derelict properties. The change could cut down the time it takes to seize a derelict property from about three years to about two years, said property committee chairman Gord Steeves (St. Vital).
What I found most shocking was the numbers we are dealing with:
The city has approximarely 600 vacant buildings, of which at least 200 could be considered derelict.

I thought Point Douglas rid itself of all drug houses. That's what the Freep keeps reporting.
