Soooo...the much hyped return of the hour long 6 pm newscast has been on for a week or two. What do you think ?

I have to admit that I haven't watched the second half hour much. It's more National news and considering I watch news in the morning and the National at night, there's only so many times I can see the same news story in one day.

Nice that Murray's back but I actually thought the "National Weather Centre" spots were fine. I would have rathered see the money for Murray put into another reporters or a co-anchor / interviewer with Janet Stewart. With Murray they've now done that annoying thing of splitting the weather into a three or four part oddessey stretched out over the hour rather that just telling me what the freaking weather is.

I still cannot get used to Stewart. I've taken to taping the newscast and fast forwarding through her uber earnest intro's and 'folksy' chatter.

Sort of disappointed in it.
1.
Me too.

The other evening they had a story about having to fill an hour's worth of time and wanted ideas from viewers. I guess they're having problems trying to fill the hour.

That's just it. They've just had the whole hour for the last two weeks.

Give them some time.

CBWT has a rich history in getting it right. It won't be long before we'll be seeing the award-winning (Genie, ACTRA) documentaries (stories that are longer than 10 minutes) that they're known for.

Janet had a double-ender with the Premier from New York. That's something you won't really see on CKY or CKND.

Geez jim, that was 20 years ago. Most of those people have moved on (i.e. been turfed) from the CBC.

I've only caught a bit of the new CBC News, but from what I gather:

-cripes Murray Parker looks good for a man his age. He is gold, Jerry!
-still not totally sold on Janet Stewart...seems like a 'if you can't beat CTV, join 'em' kind of move. But I'll wait, since it's early in the game. I think she has a great personality, just needs to establish some journalism cred.
-Mike Beauregard used to be kind of funny, now he's just getting annoying.

Why is their desk so bloody small? Looks like they're huddled around a table at Starbucks or something. Get a bloody bigger table! And bring back the late local news while you're at it, CBC.

I don't mind it, but like most others here, I usually only watch the first 1/2 hour. Murray is good, and Mike Beauregard is his usual self. As for Janet Stewart, I didn't like her at first, but she's growing on me.

On the whole, I think this was a good move on CBC's part.

Beauregard is my favorite local tv sports guy, with Bob Washington being tops on local radio.

Whatever happened to Scott Taylor? He may be on a station that I don't listen to.

Janet Stewart is all right. I rather liked the one they had a few years ago who left for Ontario. She was a local.

I have mixed feelings about Murray Parker. He's earned his retirement, so let the guy retire. I would have prefered new blood. Murray's great, but they should have found someone new. What's next, bringing back Ernie Nairn? Ernie was also very good but times change and I hope he is happily retired.

Who's the longest running local television personality in the Peg? I bet it's Sylvia Kuzyk.

Kuzyk's been on local TV since the early 70s, no? Joe Pascucci goes back to the 1980s, but beyond that there's no one else I can think of who's been behind a newsdesk for any lengthy period of time.

Stephanie Armstrong is the new Sylvia Kuzyk. Global has built a pretty solid lineup of anchors...the evening crew of Doll, Pascucci and Armstrong is damn good for a late night newscast.

Well, if they brought back Murray and you want Ernie back, why not complete the troika and bring back Garth Dawley ! I loved his mellow tones ! I think he is still around. I rmember a few years back during a broadcasting strike he was head of the union.

I think I spotted Garth a couple of months ago at Polo Park, so I think he's still alive if that was him.

Didn't say hi though.

And the comment about 24Hours winning awards 20 years ago.... well they announced yesterday that they won an award for a documentary they on inter-racial marriage in ... 2006.

The magic is there, they just need some time to produce something really good...

Mike sounds like he doesn't like the new setup, or something. Mike and Janet were talking about Murray returning. Mike's been there since '94.

Mike says that Murray is funny and Janet says she laughs at his jokes. Mike also said Murray was funny, but then Mike asks Janet if she laughs at his jokes...

Here's the clip... Mike hasn't been happy since, it seems:

Hour of news returns

I think it's just a difference in style of humour or something like that... the hand offs between Janet and Mike for the sports update seem a tad awkward, and someone else mentioned that in the newspaper or something.

But also I noticed that before the return of the full hour, Mike would start his sports report with "The Moose...", similar to when CKY used to say "Police..." at the start of their newscast a few short years ago. It gets tiring, and predictable after a while. At that point I'd just switch channels. Didn't do that in the old days when Scott (Oake) was doing the sportscast. Now he seems to have mixed things up a bit -- did Murray or Janet give some advice to that effect? The sports has been starting off with curling or sometimes other sports... now that the hour is back there is now time to put up a scoreboard for results... that's something I like to see.

Scott Oake was always happy at CBWT, but he's already doing national sports... there's Russ Hobson and Tyler Calvert at Global and Shawn Churchill and Kevin Olszewski at CKY who are current sports anchors. My pick, if Mike decides to find another station would be Kevin Olszewski -- like his goatee.

Every time I hear Murray Parker's voice I'm reminded of watching 24 Hours as a kid. He's definitely still got it.

Janet is growing on me, although it doesn't really seem the chemistry has improved between her and Mike B. (whose humor now seems to be raisin-dry).

The broadcast still seems riddled with tech errors, and the other day Janet called Murray Parker "Murray Porker", which Mike enjoyed quite a bit.

Sylvia Kuzyk is like 1000 years old but still looks good, I saw her in person she wears alot of make-up.

CBC, yes they have a small desk but they have the best looking set out of all the newscasts in Winnipeg ,Sask. and North Dakota put together.

I think CTV Winnipeg tried too hard but still looks decent, if only Global Winnipeg could get out of that shack they call a news building. That building looks like their shooting out of someones garage.

I would also like to see LIVE, PROFESSIONAL morning newscasts on ANY Winnipeg tv station, similar to those of Global Edmonton and Calgary. You would think in a city of over 700,000 people that there would alread be in place such morning newscasts. BT on City tv doesn't count because they are all a bunch of unprofessional goofballs that appear to have little intelligence; this also applies to the BT's in Alberta aswell.

How would you see live broadcasts on a Winnipeg station when you don't live here? Are Winnipeg stations broadcast in Alberta - live or otherwise?

As I have mentionned TONS of times already, I DO come home for visits, and AM aware of what the news broadcast programming is like there, unless changes are made when I am away. Plus, there is also a little device called the internet, where you can view newscast programms in their completeness, such as is available on the CBC website.

Does anyone recall the time that the relatively new (and shortlived) anchor Jim on CKY made the "schwing!" comment when they played some footage of a 20-something Sylvia in a bathing suit! It was footage of some charity event of some type, I think.

Murray Parker: every time I see him on the six o' clock news, my wife and I remark at how much all the seniors love him. "That Parker is such a nice young man..."
3.
...he got a nice new wig for his return. A little lighter in colour and a hip sort of cut. I was hoping he wouldn't come back with the old one. It was starting to look a little tatty towards the end of the Murray I reign.
