Two veteran fire fighters were lost in the St. Boniface fire, and four more were injured.
My heart goes out to those in the fire fighting community, as well as the familes of all those involved in this tragedy.
First responders play such a valuable role in soceity that I wouldn't mind a Provincial holiday in February named after them - First Responders' Day.
I know, I know, there are lots of other folks who are integral to maintaining the fabric of society, like teachers, nurses, truck drivers (try buying something that wasn't shipped here by truck), etc.
Thanks for posting - I will be praying for their families, how awful. It reminds us just how dangerous emergency responder's jobs are and that they actually do put their lives on the line for us.

Great idea!! I hope that you don't mind if I run with your idea and email Richard Clouthier with it...he may start the push for such a rememberance day holiday.

Me too. He just said he wasn't in favour of a holiday in February though...thought it was better to have one in June. (But I just sent off the email, so let's hope he brings the subject up again.) Whenever the time, I think it's a great idea.
I saw the fire from my house, and what an incredible scene. Firetrucks, ambulances, police cars and other unit cars everywhere. People pouring from their houses to check out the commotion and to try and make sense of what they were seeing.
Out of the burning house came firefighters covered in grey, trying to battle the immense fire. I saw a firefighter being administered CPR, as he was being strolled into the ambulance by stretcher. I heard the rumour that firefighters were killed, but it seemed to be too unbelievable to be true...especially in this day and age.
Respects to all the troops who fought the fire and kept control of the situation. Their efforts are certainly appreciated by all residents.
I agree, and it would be good to bring it up now. Why not call or email CBC?
One thing about this holiday though, is some First Responders would have to work on First Responders day... not to say it wouldn't honour them by having a day like this, and they would be compensated for working, but it's a bit ironic isn't it.

I wouldn't say it's all that ironic. It's no surprise that some of them are working every day. It's to be expected.

My thoughts are with their families.

People have also been approaching firefighters in person to offer their condolences, Forrest said.
"The guys are saying that there's constant visitors to the firehalls," he said. "People are driving by, and they see a firehall and they just come in, and they just want to shake the hands of the firefighters and just [are] saying, 'We're so sorry.'
"And it's really amazing — someone will come in, and the guys will start talking to them and they'll be in the firehall. They'll go for coffee and just talk with complete strangers about Harold and Tom." _____
It was mentioned around Remeberance Day that we should stop and talk with veterans. What about our firefighters?
