When I'm in the market for cheaply made faux-Scandinavian home furnishings of dubious quality, I shop at Jysk!

Oy, Jysk is even worse than IKEA. While IKEA furniture is dubious, Jysk is crap. Take bookshelves for example, for which I have a couple of Billy bookcases, which are great for what you pay. I bought a bookshelf at Jysk and it was chipped, scratched, and barely stable. Never have been back to Jysk.

IKEA is okay, but it just depends on what you go for. I happen to like some of their candles, vases, dishes, napkins and other odds and ends. But besides my bookshelves, I wouldn't get any other major furniture there. However, I know a few who have gotten kitchen cabinets there and have been greatly satisfied.

Based on my own experiences with both Ikea and Jysk, I'm of the opinion they're of equal quality.

We must have bought the same bookshelf from Jysk, then. Mine basically disintegrated after a year. A similar bookshelf from Ikea (a housewarming gift) fared little better.

Having said that, the JYSK TV stand I bought after buying my house is in pristine shape. The Ikea armoir-type thing (whose "name" eludes me) lasted nearly as long, having fallen apart just recently.

Jysk is crap! We purchased a table and chair set(solid wood, mind you) that we have now in our garden, after 3 years! IKEA, on the other hand....WOW!! Most of our furniture is from there. I wish they would bring IKEA here. Would love to replace our EKTORP couch. After 7 years of abuse from the kids, it still looks good, but is slowly getting threadbare. The IVAR shelving is super strong and versatile. We've moved several times with it.
To those of you who say IKEA sells inferior quality products...what have you purchased??? We're also wondering if the IKEA quality insurance is different in Europe, which is where we bought our things. After all, Jysk is known as BETTENLAGER in europe and has GOOD quality stuff.

I bought a computer desk from IKEA and a couple of shelving units. Both were crap!

    Jysk is pretty rough stuff.

When the lady and I moved to our first home, we bought a lot of that stuff just to keep everything off the floor. It had no purpose except to elevate stuff. It lasted until our next move, but after that was so twisty and unstable, we just chucked it.

They do have nice things there, their furniture however is not in that list -- EXCEPT:

Their fold-down couches. I have a couch I got at Jysk that has been all over Canada with me and it has survived pretty well. It has this amazing power to put anyone to sleep, regardless of fatigue. That being said, I think it's a brand available at most big-box retailers. So it doesn't strike me as exclusive in any way.

They have more than cheap bookshelves.

We outfitted our condo in Calgary with IKEA cabinets, and they were excellent. They installed them and did a professional job.

They also offer unique accessories that are difficult to find.

A friend of mine just renovated their kitchen here with IKEA kitchen cabinets.

They were of far better quality than the Kitchen Craft crap in my old house.

My IKEA shelves have lasted many years and so far no problems.
