Hey Alex, I think the subway system would not even be an option even if the city had oodles of money to spend. Our city being built on clay would make it impossible for a structure like that to exist. Look at our roads, a geologist would be able to explain better.
I think everyone should be issued a flying back pack a la James Bond / 1984 Olympic opening ceremonies.
Actually, the technoology for them is getting better and better as they are being adapted for things like urban based military operations and earthquake search and rescue teams.
Imagine the moeny the city could save - no expensive subways, they wouldn't even need to keep sidewalks clear of snow !
I think Ski is right. Hydro's new building isn't able to have a second layer of parking originally intended because of our rising water table.
From the FreeP:
Mon Jan 22 2007
A rising water table throughout Winnipeg will force builders and developers to reconsider the scope of their projects to ensure the basements aren't flooded. Steve Wiecek, a professional engineer and geologist, said provincial data show the water table in downtown Winnipeg has risen 12 metres in the last 40 years -- bringing it within about seven metres of the surface in some areas.
Tom Malkiewicz, a partner with the consulting engineering firm Crosier Kilgour & Partners LTD, said the high water table forced Manitoba Hydro to eliminate a planned lower level of the underground parkade at its new headquarters on Portage Avenue.
Winnipeg does not need to spend any money on rapid transit! Winnipeg needs its lights syncronized via computer, needs its roads in good repair, and needs to listen to the bus clients' complaints to get the right number of buses at the right time in place. I would like to know the total cost of any type of rapid service to get from point A to point B for the whole of Winnipeg, and how much time it would save at what price?? It cannot be worth it! Does the transit company charge triple the fare for its clients that are in a hurry?? That is a laugh!! User pay?? No way, not in Winnipeg! I believe that transit should be NO CHARGE!! Anyone leaving their car at home, and those that do not own a car, should ride free. Tell that to Mayor Sam!

Mr. C, I think you need to go back to Kindergarten and take it all over again dude.
I think there's one more spot in there just for you:

Go walk, but it's not considered rapid.[/quote]
That's funny.

Um.. why are you addressing me? I never really stated an opinion on a subway, BRT or LRT.

yeah, geez you guys, hasn't the simpsons taught you anything?

--Is there a chance the tracks could bend? --Not a chance, my Hindu friend.
I like rsncrntz's idea of free transit, but i think paying a couple bucks isn't too bad to keep the whole thing running. maybe low-income people could obtain a special pass or something?
imho, we just all need to stop driving and re-discover something called (gasp) community, in which we all pitch in together and suck it up a little for the commie oops i mean common good.
