Am I not seeing the private message function?

Is the "whisper to" function basically just a cc function to direct another person to the thread? And is that based solely on NW user names or can you put an email address and have it go to non-newwinnipeg people?

Is the whisper function the same as a private chatroom?

Yeah, this is where it gets interesting. The "whisper" function is only to others with accounts on the NW community. You can whisper in the middle of a thread or you can whisper someone directly. Look on the right side bar, under the huge ad, for "Discussion Filters". There you can view your whispers.

For example, I will whisper something to both you two and only you two and I will be able to see the whisper.

    Hang on...

Goodness, we wouldn't want that. That would just be open to abuse.

By the way, you can only whisper to one person at one time.

Also, if you begin to type the person's name you want to whisper to, the 'system' will search for that user as you type. Try it out.

Does anyone know what happened to all the topics on the old new winnipeg website?

In another discussion, alex mentioned they were archived.

Is it possible to access them so we can copy and paste? I'm thinking about Goth_chic's romantic restaurant post, for example.

I mean, unless I am wrong, is the old website out of commission now?

How do we get ahold of these archived topics?

Sorry for all the questions, but this whole "new website" thing really caught me off guard.

I just get this error when I click on the link...

Our Forum is currently in maintenance mode!

    We have moved our forums.

    An Error Has Occured!

    Untrapped Error:

Based on all the questions floating around, seems alex has become the newwinnipeg helpdesk.

How do we whisper to someone without posting through a board? Could this be added to their account page, like the old forum?

    That's what I'm hoping for.

The 'whisper' thing is weak, in my opinion, without having some proper 'hey!' notification.

I found it surprising how many people didn't even acknowledge the private message function on the last forum for quite a long time (over a year?!).

My opinion is that if people are communicating on an individual basis with others here, it should be made urgent. For legal reasons, I'm against having private messaging via email. But when you visit the website, it should be apparent that the 'hey!' message gets to you quickly and with little hassle.

I really don't understand the whole 'whisper in the middle of a discussion' thing. The function assumes that no one sleeps and everyone is constantly on every thread at every moment (with every hand).

I'm all about "usability", and I'm curious what you all think about how private messaging should work; what would make communicating better?

When you start a new discussion as a whisper, the entire discussion is only visible to to the receiver. Death128 "private messaged" me with this info. When I clicked on the discussions page, among the discussions was a bright yellow/orange Private Message sign.

I kind of like the whisper in the middle of the discussion. It could potentially be used to keep discussions on topic. You can edit a previous post and privatize it, so that people don't have to wade through tangential conversation.

Good point. Mods could warn people, without interupting the flow.

Good God, what would this place be without the beloved tangents?
    Oh, right, on topic.
