Does anyone know if there are any retailers of "astro turf" (not necessarily that brand name, any will do) in Winnipeg? My dad has a concrete slab in his back yard he is hoping not to have to tear up the pad to put down grass.

And, to double check before we go ahead with the fake stuff, is there a way to grow grass over a concrete pad and have it actually grow for longer than a week? I'm assuming drainage is the main issue, and nutrients would be washed away?

I don't think that you'll have any luck growing grass on a concrete slab without breaking it up and adding 6" of top soil.

I have installed carpet (that looks like grass) over concrete several times with excellent results.

The thing to watch for with this product ("astro-turf"-like grass carpet) is the variance in quality. At the time, several years ago, it went from $3.00 a sq/yd to around $20.00 a sq/yd. Amazing difference in quality...I wouldn't bother installing the cheap stuff though.

We would level an existing pad and glue down the carpet. No fuss. No muss.

I used Bill Knight but I'm sure all stores carry the stuff.

(Btw, I had a renovation company)

    Thanks for the information!

Why is it a nightmare Jim? I am curious if it's the drainage or if the grass will die off over winter and not come back...?

I am going to check out Bill Knight's and see what they suggest for coverage. Can you put this stuff over top soil as well? Or will it blend in with natural grass? It would be installed right beside a small patch of grassy area and I dont want it to stick out.

It needed the same subflorring as any other carpet. It will stand out.
