"The city says the busy bridge will be closed from 6 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Monday to allow for preventative maintenance work on its deck"

didn't we just fix this thing? Was the quality of work low?

What part of 'preventative' did you not understand?

what part of... build it right the first time.. do you not understand?
  2.
Everything needs maintenance if you want it to last. Nothing lasts forever without some help along the way. Unless someone here is an expert on bridge decking I doubt any of us here has the knowledge to say if the maintenance is premature or not.

...because it wasn't exposed to weather or no one drove over it?

The Redwood Bridge, built by the Dominion Bridge Company in 1908, is the oldest remaining original bridge in Winnipeg.
So, apparently it WAS built right the first time and is now being maintained. What is the issue?

I think they split the maintenance on it because if they were to do all the work at once, it would put them into the weekdays, which would be havoc for traffic down there. I don't exactly remember the last time what days it landed on, but I do remember zipping past the Redwood bridge on a friday morning, and despite the 1/2 km of signs in either direction, inattentive motorists were still trying to drive down the street to cross the bridge. Just imagine what that would be like on a Tuesday or a Wednesday.

Actually, the work they are doing is weather-dependent. They were supposed to do the maintenance 2 weeks ago but the rain made that impossible. That is why the bridge was opened up on Sunday.

the issue being that it was closed off for what 8 months... not that long ago. Just questioning the workmanship if its been about a year and it needs to be maintained.

Perhaps the city needed to close off the bridge as part of its study of the North Winnipeg Parkway!

    Google is your friend...

"The work involved repairing the concrete foundations both in the river and on land. Crews worked from land and from barges on the river.

This work will include repairing and replacing the bridge's structural steel components, replacing expansion joints, bearings and the existing deck (road surface). New concrete sidewalks will replace the old wooden walks and new traffic safety railings, and pedestrian hand rails will be installed.

The entire bridge will be rust-proofed by applying molten zinc to all steel surfaces. The rust-proofing is designed to last over 40 years. "

Oh, but would it have been better if they rushed that work? Come on! These things, especially with Winnipeg's weather, take time.
Thinking before typing should always be encouraged.

Would you prefer that it just be neglected?

That was all done when they closed it down before.

That is my point! It was a lot of work that took a lot of time. Now, they are making sure that a major repair job is not needed for a very long time by doing some preventative work.

None of you understand what is going on this weekend!

The bridge is being closed to try and keep the East Kildonan invasion of the Ralph Brown Community Centre's Summer Kick Off party/ Family Fun Day, saturday July 5th, 2-10 P.M. to a manageable level of activity!!

    See you there!!

Now they've been just grinding the roadway because someone tought it would be good to pave the bridge with concrete. Of course concrete has been polished by car tires and now it needs to be ground.

Any who this is pretty much a non issue.
