Who would object to a small municipal tax that would be devoted to building a light rail system in the city?

    I would support it.

For anyone good at numbers, if the city were to implement a 1% tax on all services, how much money do you think that would generate per year?

    Short answer: YES.

    Two words: N and O

Without seeing the numbers, I don't know. I'd lean towards yes considering that would simply bring us back up to pre-gst-cut numbers.

However, if they're going to raise a general tax and lower business taxes along the way, then no. The money raised HAS to go to rapid transit and nothing else.

That's actually kind of three sort of words, but all depends on how you take the two words.

I would support it, but c'mon, we would never be offered the chance to voice that opinion anyways.

I would totally support this, but, similar to Jupitergal I would be concerned if it were truly going towards transit. What is stopping the funds being diverted if city hall decided the funds were required elsewhere.

We do not need rapid transit in Winnipeg, our size and population base simply does not warrent it. There is no where in this City that you cant get to by regular transit in a reasonable time now.

And the belief that it will reduce the use of cars is insane, people who spend 10 of thousands of dollars on their vehicles will not leave them at home for any reason.

You need to get out more [s]fanman[/s] Scott. Stop getting holed up in your wittle suburbia, and see what other (large) cities look like.

And maybe it would also help if you stopped shopping at Costco with your Buick.

What service club did you belong to again, the Shriners, or the Knights of Columbus?

I respect people who can see the other persons side and respond in a calm professional way vs attempting to somehow belittle the other person simply because they disagree.

No one's belittling anyone, just pointing out a generalized tendency with comments coming from people like 'fanman'.

People love to drive! I don't know a single person who would take rapid transit.

No offence, but the people you "know"; are they 17 years old?

Transit ridership is up, so if we had rapid transit, I assure you, people will use it! If they can get speedy service to downtown, etc, they will use it!

I use the bus regularly. I don't how rapid transit is going to improve things for me or make me use the service more.

I think the city probably has bigger priorities. LIke inner city housing renewal initiatives ... or if you prefer, improving the condition of our roads, bikepaths, riverwalks etc.

Speedy service to downtown, from the furthest point in the city it only would take about 30 min. to get downtown at the most.

How busy are you that the City has to commit millions of dollars to get you there 5 minutes faster.

I would gladly give up my car if we had rapid transit.

But I don't want speedy service to downtown, I agree we already have that. I want speedy service to the REST of the freakin' city! If you want to go downtown from anywhere, it's fast. But if you want to go, say, from East Kildonan to Charleswood? You're on the bus for HOURS.
