MR C, am I to understand you simply paid him 35 dollars and you were a member right away? Good news if I understood you right!

Well, I applied. The form gets sent to Legion Central and then in a month or so I get a card so, technically, I am not a member yet but they guy said just bring the receipt with me and I don't have to sign in. No real way to get rejected, though on the application form if you fill out the 'non military' portion you do have to check off that you're not a member of a junta or other group taking up arms against the government. Guess that would be a conflict of interest if you're drinking their cheap beer one night and out shooting soldiers the next !

One of the better benefits was that I got to talk with the older vets at Rockwood and get a feel for their life and struggles , put a whole new meaning on Remembrance Day for me . The times were different but the task was the same as it would be now they answered the call of their country to pay the ultimate .
Every Nov !! Th they drink for free and I stand to sing to sing O Canada or God Save small price . Remember some legions are very strict with their rules no hats on inside is a biggy and always stand at the end of the night fore The Queen . But their even getting less strict on this one as less places are doing it . Never tell someone the war was wrong and never belittle the forces sorta makes sense . I got an associate as my father was in the navy have belonged to Rockwood for 22 yrs.

I like places, events etc. that put a mix of people together. Where else could someone under 30 and someone over 70 sit down and have a drink together. I think we do too little of that in society today. Growing up I had no older relatives in this country. the only chance I had to mix with older folks was via church events, my volunteer work at the HSC and going to the legion (or other 'old men bars") when I was younger. That's how I got to know them and respect them as a generation.

Too bad that volunteering, church and Legions are passé as a people mixer.

Transcona Legion has Bluegrass nights/Jam sessions on every other Friday night, attracts a good mix of young and old. I'm not a member but went a few times, signed in for the beer :) and enjoyed myself. So if your looking for some good entertainment for a few bucks, it's highly recommended. I do enjoy the Banjo periodically! Might be a good place for a newwinnipeg.com meetup?

LOL, it's fun :) Hey, I went there in January and Feburary in the dark of a cold winter night... and came back alive. Didn't take a snowmobile either.

It's a long way from the safety of River Heights. The barley lunch was enuff :) The old draft glasses are a nice memory touch too. I actually lived for 8 years just off Regent, by the Casino :)

Transcona is a long way from where I live. I'm not knocking Transcona but it does seem to take forever to get there. It could be just where I live... one could say it takes forever to get to my place (from Transcona) :)

edit: I am up for a meet up at a Legion though, I bet it would be a lot of fun!

Being a member of the Transcona Legion, that place is awesome. Nice to walk in and everyone says "Hey how ya doing"!!!
