    I actually can't even figure out how to add one (non animated, that is). What if I don't have an http address to link to?

    Just find any old picture on the internet. Click "view image" and copy that URL for your icon.

    So if we find a great image that happens to be say, 200x200 pixels, the image will automatically be cropped to 32x32 rather than resized? That's a rather inflexible system.

    Yes. Otherwise, you will need to edit yourself and place somewhere on the internet. You likely have free internet space available with your home internet account, or you could get a free Flikr, etc. account.

    <p>Step 1. Go here ---> <a href="http://avatars.jurko.net/">Free Forum Avatars</a>
    <p>Step 2. Select a avatar you like, Animated or Non-Animated. Click on that avatar then under the linking codes highlight direct link and copy.
    <p>Step 3. In these forums go to your account, then under personal information copy the direct link into the avatar box. Click Save button at bottom of personal info page.

    Or capture the image you want and paste it in Flickr. It will then resize it for you from small to large. Choose the size that best fits your needs. It will then provide you with the right code for this space. But that space linked above has some interesting images...
