Congratulations to Winnipeggers Gail Asper and Randy Bachman (okay, Bachman lives in Salt Spring Island, BC) who will be appointed Officers of the Order of Canada.

Among the 75 to receive the Order of Canada is abortion doctor Dr. Henry Morgentaler, which is causing controversy, not surprisingly.

Former PM Kim Campbell has been appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.

I don't know Gail, but I am happy Randy Bachman is being appointed. I wonder how much it means to that individual though? What does this status give the person, other than fame and a title? I'm naive on the Officer of the Order of Canada bit so pardon my ignorance. I don't trust wikipedia either.

Sometimes, awards are given to boost the status of the giver, rather than the recipient. For example, when the Lt. Gov gave Neil Young the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, it boosted the Province's profile more so than Neil Young's.

In this case, however, the Order of Canada means different things to different people. Some appreciate it more than others. I wonder why Randy is being honoured and not Burton. Burton has the Order of Manitoba and a honourary Doctorate of Music. All Burton jokes aside, if Randy is getting it, so should Burton.

Anyone can edit Wikipedia, which makes it a good source and a potentially dubious source of information. I use it all the time.

Do they include a little trophy for the mantel with the title?

It is a way to officially recognize merit and achievement...think of it as the national version of the honour roll that your high school had. I'm sure it means a lot to most recipients...it is a pretty rare and distinctive honour. Plus you get a nifty pin that will be a conversation piece at every gathering you attend until the end of your days!

The Gov-Gen's website has a bit of info if you don't trust wikipedia: http://www.gg.ca/honours/nat-ord/oc/index_e.asp

I can't see the comment either...

As for wikipedia, look at this: http://www.wikiality.com/Main_Page

As for the Order of Canada, I was surprised to see both Morgentaler and Buzz Hargrove on a Harper-approved list of OoC recipients.

I was very surprised to see Morgentaler given the award. Leaving my personal opinion on this person out of the question I have to ask:

How much influence does the PMO have over the OoC recipient selection?
  6.
Why the Hell is Buzzard Hargrove on the list??!

Burton Cummings will no doubt get all upset that he didnt get named to the Order so now we will have to name something else after him.

Kim Campbell served as our longest serving female , and 1st female Prime Minister.

    She is so well deserving!

Have you checked out all the legislation that was implemented during her long reign??
