what the heck? looks like it's demolition time again in Wpg? I guess Polo Park just has a big parking lot now where the arena used to be. I have to read more about this. Well off to TO, latr.

I really doubt that a new stadium will be built on Point Douglas. A stadium requires a pretty large footprint of land.

So unless they are planning on bulldozing the entire community it seems pretty unlikely.

There is a plan in today's Freep showing the layout. It looks like it will fit, even though many of the NW members have often times claimed it would not.

So where in Point Douglas are they planning to build? The diagram doesn't appear to be online.

This from the Free Press article: Seating: A schematic circulating right now calls for a 25,000-seat stadium. Could it be expanded for future Grey Cup championships or other large events?

    25,000 seats? Too small, imho.

Doesn't the current stadium seat close to 30,000?

East of the Louise Bridge and Higgins. And both sides of the CPR main line. Parking would be north of the tracks and the stadium is south.

I'm pretty sure it does. I've been to games where there were over 27k people in attendance.

Edit/update: Current capacity is 29503 seats for football.

Why would they even consider a stadium with less seats than the current one?

If they are going to build it, do it right and put it with a dome (preferrably retractable) across from the convention center where they can use it as well, add a hotel, put some bars, restaurants, shops on the exterior, water park whatever. Just don't build it if it's going to be some cheap re-creation of what we have already

Isn't there a park on the north side of the tracks right now?

I'm torn... I think Point Douglas could be an extremely beautiful locale and what it could do to the area seems attractive. Then again across from the Convention Centre seems almost perfect, especially if it could be integrated with the convention centre and hotels. 25,000 seats might be too small though. Just let's make up our minds and do something!

I'd think that the Convention Centre site is a bit small. Obviously they'd have to close Carlton, but unless the buildings on the north side of Broadway between Hargrave and Edmonton are torn down, the 110 metres from York to the backs of the buildings is considerably less than the 180 or so that the current stadium is wide.

I'm not quite getting where this location in Point Douglas is....... can someone name me a business near that location? Near Gateway Packers? B&R Mills?

I like the idea of Point Douglas site (I'd need to see / hear something more specific to say 100%). There are large tracts of land there that need filling and a lot of old marginal industrial sites that could be used. It's not likely that some little housing development or major retail is going to move in anytime soon so it will remain pretty marginally used land.

It's also a good locale because it's both central AND a bit out of the way, sort of like the ballpark. When the park isn't being used it's not a dead zone in the middle of everything which, I think the stadium could be right in the cbd. IF the two facilities (CC and Stadium) could be tied in together more than just two structires sitting side by side, you could also kill two birds with one stne: convention centre expansion and new stadium. Not sure if the footprint of the site is large enough, though.

Of course, given the track record lately of everything from MTS to Hydro to WRHA - I think we've established that new development cannot infill vacant land, it must go where existing buildings are an leave vacant land vacant so it will probably be a choice of where the Delta / Lakeview complex are or where the University of Winnipeg sits ;-)

    I believe right here: Map

South of the tracks, on the point.

I think they would have to buy out the Gateway Paper Mill.

Not sure if that link was working or if my proxy interfered... Here is (likely) the same link:

Isn't that the CP Main Line running through the center?

    Yes...

Good lord, imagine the traffic spilling out of that neighborhood with everyone trying to cross the Louise bridge all at the same time. Everyone North and East would be on it, but also Southerners from St. Vital and Waverly West too becuase they'd take Lag to Bishop.
