There are some very attractive "brownstones" that are just as you describe fabiocdn. They are seen more frequently as density increases. We may not see them too frequently here in Winnipeg, but they can look very attractive and would be desirable met thinks...
Yeah but would you rather be "King of the castle" or "Lookout Guard?" Like: "Honey, what's on TV tonight?" "Just a sec, I'll check out what the front neighbor is watching." Okay, but if there's nothing good for me, I'll just hit the hay, you can shut the volume down and listen to their TV." "Oh yeah, tell the paperboy to quit throwing the Fpress on the roof, it's hard to read from up there..."
Just what's wrong with our stadium that a couple of million wouldn't fix? Apart from seats and toilets, what's left? Why can't some retail space be developed to give the Bombers income by the Bombers themselves?
It is mind blowing that anyone would think of spendind $300 million for a stadium, that might be used by the Bombers for 12 games in a season?
It is mind blowing that Winnipeg would spend 2 trillion dollars for a rapid transit system, when they haven't fixed the damn roads, so you cannot drive rapidly, or when you do find a patch of recently repaired road, and you ZOOM off at breakneck speeds, you come to the next lights and have to stop for the damn RED LIGHT that isn't being controlled to be a GREEN light, because the controls were built in 1928, just before Al Gore invented computers and the internet.
Who is in such a rush to save 10 minutes going on a damn bus??
The whole discussion is so stupid!! Hasn't anyone got any common Cents left?? You don't spend 2 trillion dollars for 9% of the market, that take the bus.
A properly implemented LRT would see staggering adoption.
We aren't trying to reduce and/or maintain the number of people riding mass transit. We're trying to increase it.
The reason why people don't use it now is because of availability and frequency. I can say that until I'm blue in the face and people won't seem to internalize it. With a few exceptions, you only use the bus in Winnipeg if you're old, going to school or can't afford a vehicle. This is because the only other alternative - which is a vehicle - is the only other option. We have two extremes. On one hand, busses that are slow, bad for extreme weather conditions, infrequent and only operate during certain hours. On the other, we have vehicles which are the highest cost to operate, but plug all the freedom back in.
Automated, 24/7 LRT. It can be done in stages and still be ten times more successful than any other idea.
Not to mention, some adjustments to fine tune it to Winnipeg's expectations: Perhaps not as frequent as every 5 minutes as in Calgary (they only operate three or so lines). But maybe every 10 to 15, this would make it cheaper as less trains would have to run.
A simple definition fits perfectly too! It's basically a "high tech sidewalk", you go in one side at one place, and come out the other in a different place. Very seamless - another key aspect to focus on.
I've spoken to many people - including bus drivers - and BRT is not the solution. It will fail to meet the requirements and is therefore a waste of time and money. Do it right, do it once.
The bottom line was that the time from first stop to last was NOT significantly reduced under the last plan put forward. If you cannot solve that fundamental flaw you will NOT increase usage.
Omega, sounds very nice and all, but until this city wraps its head on how big it wants to get and how it handles a massive undeveloped acreage in the middle of the City, its purt near impossible to make any sense of what it would cost or where it would run.
On the positive side, we already have the potential right of ways in place.
Holly wood, zip nada none...the railroad tracks form a physical and psychological barrier....remove them and Tthere would no longer be a NPD /SPD, only a PD.

Hmm...not looking familiar...the one I saw had a parking area on the south of it, was right on the banks of the red. But hey, there are only but one or two, so must be it.
