How often has it happened that someone got busted doing 80 in a "60 when passing workers" and used the excuse "but I didn't see any workers around"? How many highway workers have been injured or killed? I think the answer to these question may shed some light on why the "when passing workers" clause has been removed. If the populace can't determine when workers are on duty, then a 24hr rule needs to be in effect. Besides, Isn't there movement into getting workers on the job on evenings and weekends? Thank the few who drive way over the speed limit for the fact that you can no longer get away with going 10-20 kmh over.

Saw this article in the Winnipeg Free Press last Wed which may give some us a way to avoid unfair tickets. However, using it certainly is illegal. It also opens up a whole can of worms regarding people using it who blatantly speed through known red light camera intersections without fear of being ticketed.

Title - Spray makes tickets vanish

Mythbusters tested a number of sprays, covers and other reported techniques to avoid photo radar tickets.

    None worked.

    Big surprise.

I got nailed on Lagmodiere at Knowles no workers present and was told that the law no longer is only when workers present , paid it and chalked it up to my stupidity of not being up to date on the change, 830 on a saturday nite seems cash grabish.

    It is a cash grab.

Oh yeah, Mythbusters will NEVER show people how to break/avoid the law. NEVER!

I saw that Mythbusters episode as well & Adam tested with his Canon SLR. I was not very impressed with their scientific method. They should at least have tested with actual Photo Radar equipment! Perhaps the flash on the SLR is not strong enough?

On the website, they claim to have had tests done by fox news using a Photo Radar Van. You can actually see the pictures they took with the van & they are surprisingly blank!?

Uh no. They tested with an actually photo radar unit (ATS Axsis SC-300).

Perhaps you watched a different episode.

So is it really that difficult to slow down at construction zones? I just can't see it as a cash grab if a driver ignores a speed limit every single driver seem to be aware of. I would rather call it ignorance tax.

I was listening to Vic Grant on CJOB. He was ticked because of the belief of a tax grab too, so he went out and did one of his "Excuse Me" stories about it.

When it started, it sounded as though he was going to rip them a new one, until he found out that the camera radars are set to "trigger" at 13kph OVER the speed limit. Even the Camera Lights are set that way.

So...those people who are given tickets in construction, school, park, hospital, etc. zones are not just a couple of klicks over...they are 13kph. Thats pretty significant.

I do agree about the signs not being posted clearly (ie. construction zones, etc.)...and personally I believe every camera van should have a BIG ORANGE SIGN on the back saying "CAMERA IN USE". The idea of these things is SUPPOSED to be to slow traffic in "high risk" areas...NOT to STEAL money...but when you realize that there is some "give", and yet people STILL violate the posted limits...theres something wrong.

A friend of mine is one of the Commissionaires in the vans...and he says it's very rare for him to go through a week of work, without at least one person triggering his camera at more than 40kph above the limit. That's doing 100kph in a 60 zone...or 90kph in a residential street. Try to imagine someone doing 90kph down the street in front of YOUR house...and then imagine YOUR kid out there playing when they do.

Cash grab or not...THOSE are the idiots who should be paying the fines.

A friend of mine got a photo radar ticket for doing 61 on Corydon...she should've known better, but still...11 over is not some reckless Jeff Gordon-like speed, and it shows you will get tagged for going less than 13 over.

I will agree with Tom Brodbeck on this one...when at 7:00 on a Sunday morning there is a photo radar van set up on Pembina Highway near St. Maurice School, or a van set up near an unmannned construction zone on McPhillips literally metres from the city limit (and the 100 kmh speed limit zone), I don't think it's really about safety so much as it is making a few bucks.

I've never had a ticket in my life, but I still think it is BS.

11 km/h over on Corydon is still more than 20% over the posted speed limit.

When I was learning how to drive I understood a 10% grace limit. 20% seems reasonable grounds for a ticket.

And too, it makes a difference where it was on Corydon. Some places, 60 is a reasonable speed imo.

its actually 10K over now ( with a 9K get out of jail free card) used to be a 12K get of jail free card (so 13K was when you got the ticket) and it still is 12K free if it is a police officer using a radar gun and a camera is not involved.

60 on the Corydon strip is pretty fast - 60 out towards Tuxedo is not quite so. Still, you have to be going a good deal over the limit, whether it's 11 kph or 13 kph over.

It might seem a little bit of a stretch, but what's the difference between saying "if the guy had done what the cops said he wouldn't have gotten tasered" and "if the guy had done what the sign said he wouldn't have gotten a speeding ticket"? The outcome is a little more drastic in the former but the same logic applies.

The only location of the speed cameras (at an intersection) on Corydon is at Kenaston.
