Under cross-examination by the lawyer for the Dumas family -- Donald Worme -- Mateychuk was asked why he didn't strike Dumas with his retractable baton, rather than use pepper spray.

"You don't come within arm's reach of a guy with a screwdriver," said Mateychuk, who was asked to demonstrate his own baton in court yesterday. "It's not a risk any of us are paid to take."

As I suspected, our friggn' cops are pussies....over-paid crossing guards imo. For $75K a year, you're effin right we pay you to take risks.

What a crock Jimmy, I mean come on this little punk ass had a weapon refused several requests to put it down then lunged at the cop. he deserved what he got period.

What is upsetting to his family is that they cant play the race card on this one which means no cheque for them, aww shucks might have to go out and actuallly work for a living like the rest of us.

I see it both ways....bot only after the officers comments.

Originally I felt the police sure seemed to be justified in shooting this young person..

But after a police comment like " we dont do that"...well I am less sure now.

I haven't been following it that much believe someone earlier testified that when the cops were initially called about Dumas being spotted it was reported he had a gun, not a screwdriver, so going in they may have thought he had both.
As for fanman, you strike me as the type that if you or one of your kids was ever hurt or worse by the police you'd be at the trough for everything that you could get as well.

best guess is all in the article. "Mateychuk said police aren't trained"

They simply do not recieve nearly enough training in all the variety of situations that they can encounter.

Initial training needs to take longer then the small amount of time given now, and there should be a refresher course that all cops should be required to take every couple of years.. for their safety and for ours.

No doubt that he was a little creep, but he sure didn't deserve to die over this.

It sure seems to me that the cop(s) are in a kitchen that's too hot for them.

First of all being a decent parent who teaches his children from right and wrong I would seriously doubt my children would ever be in that situation.

And if they did I would pass on the same advice I got from my Father which was if your ever in jail, dont call me because I will leave your ass in there.

Ever hear of unconditional love? Guess not eh.

Perhaps they are in jail because of a mistake or whatever. Oh well...it takes all kinds.

I guess they could have beat him till he was stupid?

Jimmy walk a mile in their shoes and see how well you fare. Every one is a critic from the sidelines. There were a million different outcomes that could have happened there and this is the one that guy has to live with. Even the guy admitted that he could have done it differently. Of course hindsight is 20/20.

yeah...it was not exactly played up that much... but it happened.

I think the fact that he's having a hard time with this and that he knows he could have done things differently speaks to what should have been done.

I don't really have to walk in anyone's shoes to see that it should have been done in some manner that would not have led to a senseless death.

I find that all the reasoning and justification here to be nothing more than bullshit. The police training here seems to be sadly lacking as they sure left out a few alternative measures.

This is where a taser should have been used. But, I guess they only use them on unarmed suspects.
  7.
Jimmy all the training in the world can't prepare you for every situation. Up until this point I bet the cop that fired his pistol had never drawn it before to protect himself. I can't speak for what happened because I wasn't there, neither was anyone else here. But if it were me I would have hit him with my baton regardless, however that's me. I would imagine people would complain that I used excessive force. Maybe he needed a spanking.

While he did not "deserve" to die, his conduct was certainly the main factor which resulted in his own death.

So when a 14 yr old comes after you with a screwdriver, what's your response?

    BTW They did pepperspray him.

LOL J2F....so this is where the Taser should have been used. YA THINK

Sorry, that would mean someone would have to run to the trunk of a vehicle and get it out. Maybe they could have asked the kid to hold on for a second.

Tasers on every cops belt is the way to go.
