I've always tried very hard to like his movies. This time it just might work.

My lady friend showed me the trailer as she knows how passionate I am about my home town. I rather liked it.

Where can I see the movie in its entirety?

Where can I see the movie in its entirety?

I just flew back to Vancouver last night after being stuck in the Peg for over a month and STRANGELY...it was being shown on my Air Canada flight.

Watching that film was a magical moment in my life. It completely sums up Winnipeg....well im my mind...and the "vibe" I get from it.

The intro and the way he describs the city and how everyone is trying to leave as long as they dont fall into Winnipeg's slumber...which is sooo comfy and easy to do. Its sucks you IN! The history lessons in the film will make Mr Christian drool. its incredible. Lots of shots also taken form a moving vehicle showing the vacant winter streets...and the haze from the thick winter air blowing by..while the snow appears like fluffy pillows comforting the car ride...wow...really beautiful film..all while I was 30,000 feet right above the pillowy clouds..LEAVING Winnnnipeg!! I MADE IT!! Im freeee!!! (watch it, you'll get the joke, its not me being an asshole)

The family bits in the film were strange, but Any Winnipegers or ex Winnipeger should still watch it. Some parts you may wonder wtf is this about, or its dragging (depends on your attention span), but then he will shift gears and mention the Jets, or a swimming pool with THREE floors, with a pool on each floor, or how a bunch of horses were escaping a fire and ran into the river and were stuck frozen...dead..for the whole winter.....or the secret streets-the backlanes....or the legend subterranean forks underneath the forks, the arteries....all gorgeously done.

I found the whole film absolutely fascinating.. Next time I see Guy Maddin at Bar Italia, I will have to tell him how his film really touched me....without sounding like a cheesy fan

I had high hopes for this movie and Zwikster's commentary confirms my initial thoughts. Any word on where it can be seen?

I have an AC flight scheduled for later this month but I don't want to wait that long!

Anyone know if it's playing in any other cities? I wouldn't mind catching it out here.
  5.
I think it may be the same in Calgary, the 27th. (according to the article it's opening in several Canadian cities on this date).

Its pretty funny how I got to see it ont the airplane on my way out of Winnipeg...and its not even released there yet...

"The My Winnipeg screening promises to be even more electrifying, because the documentary, with its snow-drenched imagery and dark mix of fantasy, fact and outright rant, contains much that could anger thin-skinned civic boosters. "

    good quote.

I liked it. He is actually teaching two classes at the U of M this fall.
  6.
So he's not moving to Toronto then?
  7.
Yeah, he has already moved. He is a guest lecturer I expect.

Finally saw the movie on an AC flight (out of Winnipeg, appropriately enough) on Saturday morning.

    It was great!

Classic dreamlike, slightly madcap Maddin. Probably among his most accessible films. It immortalizes some Winnipeg institutions like the Paddlewheel Restaurant, "IF" Day, and the old Arena. However, I can only wonder what someone who has never been here would think after seeing that movie!

Now I can't get the opening tune out of my head..."Win-ni-peg, Win-ni-peg...Won-der-ful Winnipeg..."

I thought he had a free showing of it at Burton Theatre last night? I have it marked on my calendar but couldn't make it.

Im not sure if it was too dark to see the clouds, but wasnt it a wonderful viewing while floating above the soft pillowy clouds? (which reminded me of snow)

I was talking to Trish from NEXT yesterday and she said Maddin moved back to Winnipeg...hated Toronto.

This thread is reminding me of certain bits of the movie...like the supposedly long-running local TV drama "Ledge Man" with the hero being talked out of committing suicide every episode for 50 years...hahaha...it's not that hard to imagine something like that becoming a cult favourite in this town.
