I liked the article that Doug Spiers (sp?) wrote this morning, even if it was a re-hash of an email forward. Why? Because for once, he was NOT TRYING TO COPY DAVE BARRY! I long since stopped reading anything he wrote, but I was intrigued today just because it was about the Maddin film. I really have to say I was not disappointed by his COMPLETELY NEW AND ORIGINAL STYLE. I guess he's reinvented himself.

Maybe his next column will be a eulogy for Sinbad, or maybe Tom Hanks. Or an appeal to help Jessica Mydek.

Wow, that's a great write up - good for Madden. <br>

I like when Ebert says " Is that true? It's as true as anything else in the film. My friend Tony Scott of the New York Times thought he should check out some of the facts in "My Winnipeg," but decided not to. Why should he doubt the film?" to keep the aura of a fantasy-documentary intact.

I don't think a Maddin film has ever received such universally glowing reviews before. Not that his previous ones were reviewed poorly, but everyone seems to be loving this one up.

Agreed. What this is doing for Winnipeg's profile cannot be measured. But it is safe to say it is all good.

I guess he has taken the neat elements of his past films that intrigued people (the vintage b&w, sharp cuts, Vaseline-lensed images) and put it in a style of film that people can understand better (a documentary). He's created this "fantasy bio-documentary" (I am sure there is a slicker, Hollywood term for it like "fanbido" or something like that). It seems to have really caught people's attention. Wanna bet that in the next couple of years the genre will really take off and you'll have My Cleveland, My Vancouver, My Idaho etc !!

Ah, I see he refers to it as "docu-fantasia" http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117934651.html?categoryid=31&cs=1

Nice. Why not encourage them to rent it when they get a chance ?!

because im sure that film will be on high demand at any movie rental place, and plus convincing my sleepwalking friends of anything can be a hard thing.

I'm going to see it this weekend. If you can go see it this weekend if you're thinking of seeing it, because they base how long the movie will be in theatres on the ticket sales THIS weekend.

Its a good movie, funny and serious at the same time.

    Great Job.

    We need more Maddins

    Saw the film tonight...loved it.

The one section that didn't seem to fit, was the Jets/Arena/Eaton's section. It seemed......well, and I mean this lovingly, but a little bit too much like something off the pages of newwinnipeg.com. In other words, it was too "real."

But I don't hesitate to call it a masterpiece. It's a beautiful, loving, sad and hilarious portrait of the city I call home.

I took my friend to the movie tonight, with doubts, but we both ended up loving it. I've seen parts of "Tales for the Gimli Hospital" or whatever its called, and didn't much care for it, but this was pretty good.

The MT Center? Lorette street? Hilarious. So many Humorous references in this movie. I wonder where the facts stop and the fantasy begins though.

Something I didn't get was the aboriginals in the sky, where they're camped out on rooftops (with the happyland sign behind them). Don't get that.

Guy Maddin is hosting a contest to have people create films about their hometowns, with the prize being a trip to Winnipeg.
    Now THAT is creative thinking!

Didn't like it at all. I can't watch any of his films. I appreciate his sense of irony and humour, but not my style. Maybe one slight chuckle. He sure has an obsession for 'the forks'. Also don't know why everyone sat in their seats at the end to watch the credits. Maybe I was the only one in the theatre not involved in the movie :)

    Hasn't come to Calgary yet.

You think it would be a no-brainer considering how many ex-pats live here.
