Hockey Night in Canada theme song may be benched permanently from broadcasts
TORONTO - Hockey fans called a major penalty against the CBC Thursday as the national broadcaster seemed prepared to do away with the Hockey Night in Canada theme - a beloved 40-year-old musical institution as familiar to Canadians as the country’s national anthem.
“CBC won’t get away with that,” said Mary Quigley of Cape Breton, N.S., outside the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. “The Canadian people won’t let them get away with that.”
Lol ! Not a very smart move on CBC's part. It's one of the few really iconic things we have as a nation and you had to know that people think of it more than just a tv theme song...sheesh. How many rintone downloads did they sell of it a couple of years back - a hundred thousand ? (Ironically that's what her agent and CBC are invoved in a lawsuit about - who should get the revenue from that). To then dump it is silly.

I wonder if the management company was so quick to put it up on their website as an aide in the neogtiations. Now thy have CBC over a barrell !

I remember CBC did a piece on her a while back and I don't think in the beginning she received royalties. I don't think it was until the 80's that she started to. Nice little earner at $500 per play !!
That's true. If the broadcast agreement was going tocahnge so much with the intro of TSN CBC may have figured to not keep exculsive Saturday night broadcast and ditch the HNIC format all together. If they were thingking of retiring the programme there'd be no need for the theme.
I think one of the greatest challenge with contemporary society is a lack of tradition. The HNIC theme is a tradition that I really don't want to abandon. Change for the sake of change is unnecessary.
Posted By: Jimmytufish Shouldn't any such theme song be generated by the NHL anyway?
Why? TSN, NBC, Rogers Sportsnet, Versus... all those networks broadcast NHL games and are free to decide on their own theme music. The Monday Night Football theme, which is about as recognizable as American sports themes go, was not an NFL commission.
This is a decision that will be made that will suit both the business of HNIC and the composer. If an agreement cannot be met then HNIC has no choice but to get a new song.
To say that HNIC should just pay ANYTHING to get the rights to the song is retarded and only makes the composer more greedy. Canada could do itself a great service by dropping the petitions and the public outcry and let the composer sweat a little bit.
The song is certainly iconic but isn't worth spending insane amounts of money for. Perhaps a fresh song would be a good idea. Change is good you know!
I would like to nominate "Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)" by Warren Zevon
