"The friendly, jovial gentleman so many know as Nick, of Nick's Inn in Headingley fame, is no longer with us. Sadly, John (Nick) Cholakis passed away suddenly and unexpectedly early this past Tuesday morning. He was 85. He was not the "Nick" the restaurant was named after. John and wife Harriett took over the restaurant some time after the original Nick passed away, but customers automatically assumed John must be Nick. Rather than explain it constantly, and since his middle name was Nicholis, John just went with it.

John will be greatly missed by his family, staff, and the countless regular customers -- including Marly and me -- who looked forward to his friendly smile and bottomless cup of coffee each time we were in.

John's family would like all Nick's customers to know that because of the funeral, Nick's Inn will be closed tomorrow but re-open again Saturday.
"Nick", the hardest-working man in the restaurant business, wouldn't have it any other way. Details regarding prayers and funeral details are available in today's Winnipeg Sun obituary announcements."

Is anyone familiar with this place? My mom took me there once, but I don't remember anything about it. My mom did love the place, and a few other people who I can't recall at the moment. What's good there?

QAside from the smell of swamp, it's a good place to eat. Nick was a cool cat always took the time to make sure you were taken care of ditto his partner.

Always fun to go get some Milkshakes with the kids

I used to go there all the time on Saturdays right after the car auctions I used to attend. The place had great food. Good service. He will be missed.

A breakfast to die for........only supped there once or twice but if that was any indication of what regular customers got then I envy them.

Hope the restraunt carries on as it is a instution and would be the only one left other then the Sals and the gas stations . Nothing beats family owned for service.

I stole a menu once, and almost feel bad.
It's in my kitchen. Friends sometimes as a joke ask for items off the menu, but I can't make it all.

I've only been to Nicks once. The food was good...it reminded me of the Red Top.

    Oh no, that's too bad!

I used to eat there often when I worked for the Headingley Headliner. Their offices were right next door.

    Thanks for posting this.

Haven't found a restaurant yet that compares with Star Grill. That one's my favourite. Also haven't found a burger joint that compares with Nicks and Kelekis (I think I spelled that wrong.) Haven't found a great family restauarnt that compares with Park Tower, either.

The Cactus Club for sure; great atmosphere, service and hot waitresses! They are just opening one up in Edmonton; too bad there are none in Winnipeg. Winnipeg could use more restaurants like this one.

Cactus Club??? Is it a chain? if so then Winnipeg does not need anymore of those. We already have earls and Joeys. We need more one of a kind restaurants. :)

It's actually The Cactus Club Cafe, and trust me, it's a classy chain that would be very beneficial for Winnipeg. I see Joey Tomatoes is now operating in Winnipeg; can't wait to try it out as it was the bomb out here in Edmonton.

You'd enjoy the Cactus Club Cafe; guarenteed!

I am not into chains....when the hubby and I do get out we like to go to Mise, Fude, Orlandos or try a new restuarant. Is Cactus Cafe family friendly? We have small children so when we take them out we tend to frequent family oriented establishments.

You bet; it's a higher end version of something like The Keg. Everyone is welcome. The food is excellent!

Cause earls and that are NOT family friendly. My hubby likes earls, me thinks he likes the waitresses, I can't stand the food. Nothing appeals to me, the only thing I like at earls are the drinks! Ha
