Maybe it's just me and the crowd i hang around with but this could fly. I personally love the idea. He just needs to really focus on how much a family of 4 could actually save in tax cuts by making themselves more energy efficient. He needs in big bold letters if you make $60g per year this is what you save right off the top in income tax in big bold letters. Focus on the fact that he is actually putting the money back into people's hands to spend how they want. This could do so much good....

What could it do?

Seriously... so its a different tax.. yet it saves you money and the money from it goes to green ideas...
simple.. just take the money that currently exists and put it into Green ideas..

remember anything that saves you Tax money REDUCES the amount the government has to spend on things like... oh gosh... green ideas...

Regarding ice disappearing- when J2F was born all of Manitoba was covered in ice, and gradually the ice has been receding. Gradually over 1,000's of years. So what has changed? The doom is coming people are full of bullcrap. There is no link between carbon and ice disappearing, and furthermore, them's that will get used to the gradual changes will survive, as in the past!
J2F told me that he was really sorry to see the dinasaurs disappear, but they refused to make the proper adjustments.
Winnipeg is well positioned if one calculates the warming earth, so in about 3000 years we will have 2 crops, instead of 1, won't freeze our butts at -35, and we can cancel our CAA membership, and save $100.
Boy am I looking forward to all those benefits, as I am not interested in the B.S. negative nanny reports.
Whenever there is an action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Some good, some bad! Stop worrying about all the bad reports, and look up the good things that will happen! All the mosquitoes will be gone! Wow!! Think about property values!!

But Dion could, if he was smart, play this up as a massive tax cut and show people how much money they could be saving. That's the positive way to spin this thing. It empowers the people is what it does. You want to drive your SUV, well you can but you are paying through the nose for it. You want to take public transit, well could for you because you are saving a ton of money doing it.

I agree though, there is some in the canadian public who, mention the word tax, and they are turned off no matter what it's for.

How can raising taxes be a tax cut?

Alberta was once covered by glaciers AND jungles full of dinosaurs.

Because it's supposed to be revenue neutral, so it's a major tax cut if you are smart and energy efficient. If you aren't then it's probably raising your taxes.

Problem with that tough... its the people drive the SUVs who donate to political campaigns...

Tell me about the millions of people that have to commute to work in their cars. Tell me about the millions of people that cannot afford to upgrade their homes to become more energy efficient. Tell me about the truckers that have to drive. Tell me about the food that has to be delivered to stores. ...and on and on...

...show me how this will work.

This has to work because the system is broken. Your right there are millions of people that choose live 50km away from where they work....good idea over the long term? Probably not? Time to look at telecommuting, better mass transportation, more fuel efficient cars etc....

This has always been the excuse...our system is so broken why bother fixing it? it costs too much to fix it! But at the same time it just gets more and more broken. Maybe if more people asked to telecommute it would become popular here. It's done all over europe. Maybe if more people rode the GO train in the mornign it would be more efficient and there would be more routes (looking at europe again here).

This sucky story about how we can't change because blah blah blah will be effected is so tired and old. People need to stop sitting on there hands and start doing something.

"Time to look at telecommuting"
thats a business decision not something "the worker" is in charge of
"better mass transportation"
WE DONT HAVE THE POPULATION!!!! that most other big cities do that have trains and such taking people from 100-200K outside the city into the city for commuter trains.... its a reality we need to face it. Can it be done? well yeah... but at a cost per person that gets quite prohibitive.
"more fuel efficient cars, etc."
well yeah...

Good questions, and this is exactly what has to be considered.

Ultimately, a carbon tax would put a lot more control in the hands of individuals. If taxes shifted over to consumption taxes (like a carbon tax), you can make decisions that will affect the level you're taxed at. Don't want to pay more gas taxes? Buy a small car or ride the bus. Don't like paying taxes on natural gas? Add insulation or new windows (both available through Hydro). And so on and so on.

I think that's why an honest open debate is needed - instead of dismissing this idea right away.

People need to be realistic in their approach...not just keep using the tired old... just do something approach.

The just do something approach got us to where we are today, a sprawling city that can ill afford to upkeep its infrastructure...

No, that's the status quo "change is bad" approach. We can't go on like that.
