Since the May long weekend is fast approaching us, I wanted input on various campgrounds in the province. I have been to Grand Beach, Birds Hill, Hecla Island, Whiteshell, and Riding Mountain. I really enjoyed Riding Mountain and Hecla, but found Grand Beach a little too rowdy for my liking. Would anyone know what the fees are for camping in a provincial campground? How much would it be to rent a cabin? To rent a space to pitch a tent? It's been awile since I've camped in Manitoba so I couold use this info.

Anyone else thinking of taking off during the long weekend?

Hey Scott... feel like traveling.. head to clearwater lake or Rocky lake north of the pas

All fees and booking (ypu book over the internet ) for provincial campgrounds can be found on the www.manitoba.ca website.

Probably too late to book many cabins anywhere though

If you want a deal on renting a cabin, check out Camp Morton. Did that years ago, it was reasonable and nice. Kids were small and it was a good quiet time.

Also, some provincial campgrounds now have yurts. Haven't rented one, but it sounds interesting. Fees vary on levels of service.

Grand Beach is ok during the week, but takes on a different personality for the weekend. Bit of a drive, but Rushing River on the other side of Kenora is neat.

The Nutimik Lake campground is pretty nice. Spots are far apart and a couple nice beaches on the lake.

When I was a kid my parents rented a cabin at Camp Morton.

I remember them being really nice... but you still had an outhouse outside.

OMG haven't been to Camp Morton since Moses was in the bullrushes. Didn't think that place was still open. All I remember was that it was the worst summer vacation we ever had. Back then it was church run and they were the stingiest b**t**ds on earth. Who runs it now?

But the best outhouses in the province. My kids were small and quite "discriminating" about the facilities they would use, but had no issues with Camp Morton. There is a central shower/washroom with real porcelain as well.

The Catholic Church turned it over to the Province many years ago. The Sisters of the Holy Names still have a cottage there. Besides, we're talking about family cabins not the kid kind of camp experience.

Alberta (and I think Saskatchewan aswell) do not have entrance fees for provincial parks. Why does Manitoba have access fees?

To pay for the upkeep, maintenance and services that the parks provide.

Our family did rent one of the cottages and the experience was still rotten. To keep us kids from starving to death since the "Good Sisters?" were so frugal in dispensing the food at mealtimes that we had paid plenty for, my Mom used to walk us kids the mile or so up to the village store for snacks of any kind (the selection was limited). In any case the facilities would have had to have improved vastly.

Moses is out of the bullrushes and the cabins are now run by the Province of Manitoba and the facility has improved greatly. I was there about 6 or 7 years ago with my 4 kids and it was fine.

I guarantee, it is not the same experience that you had with the "Good Sisters", but I hope that you've since recovered from it.

Jim, you're sounding like a sissy. Nothing like the great outdoors, the wind in your face and the bugs in your hair. Just get a better mattress, you'll be fine...eventually.

I've said it before, my idea of roughing it is a motel...

Hecla has a nice campground. The camp sites are large and well treed, and there are hiking trails, tennis courts, one of the best golf courses in the province. I'm heading there next month.
