As for the lack of traffic, this is what the newsletter says:
    http://winnipeg.ca/publicworks/MajorProjects/DisraeliBridges/newsletterApril2008.pdf

Vibration through the deck and piers caused by traffic during construction poses significant risk. If traffic were to flow over the bridge before the concrete deck is fully set, which usually takes more than 72 hours, the result would be a lower quality roadway with possibly-inferior structural integrity, reduced service life, and higher long-term maintenance and repair costs. Therefore, even if the bridges were partly-open to traffic during construction, numerous closures would be required to pour the new deck, making for a longer construction schedule and higher project costs.

Moreover, traffic impacts for partly-open and fully closed options are virtually the same. Mitigative measures are being developed to
minimize impact and help downtown area traffic flow better during the project. These include traffic signal optimization, parking changes, added turning lanes/prohibitions, and special access turns for Elmwood businesses and residents immediately east
of the bridge. More measures will be developed and evaluated as the project proceeds from concept form to the more detailed design phase.

Nordman wins for tactless straight-to-the-point conciseness. Way to start an East-West fight Nordo!

I think that's probably the first time I've heard Grant Nordman's name mentioned... anywhere after the election.

Mind you, the same can be said of Jim Malloway, and I used to live in his riding.

I like the idea of the buses only. Even if the buses had to take it at 30 kmh to ease up on vibrations - it's better than the alternative.

In reality they also only have to make it over the river. After which they could exit and bypass the rest of the freeway and go down Higgins to get onto Main St.

Maybe Nordman's onto something... if all the East-siders would stay on the East, then there is no need for the bridge in the first place! Just close the bridge and keep the $125 - $160 million! ;-)

yeah.. but they would still be able to get over here in the winter time.. so hmm.... we would maybe have to install some sort of thermal generating station to warm up the river and melt the ice.... and BAMO! goodbye $125 million.

Ah, very true. One span only. Even if there were days that it was not possible to travel over I could only imagine, with my limited bridge building knowledge mind you, that at least 75% of the time there would not be an issue passing over via bus. That's huge vs. no access for 16 months.

I used to spend a lot of time in Lockport around the time they closed the Locks and Dam for renos ! Lol, that was funny as you had people in a house on the other side of the bridge that could look right into their workplaces but had to hoof it to near Selkirk to cross. Whenever we got together for drinks people would jokingly make a big deal saying goodbye to friends and girlfriends heading back to the other side. "bye, dear, I promise I'll write !"

No matter what Malloway did the city councilors response was fully inappropriate, immature and should be grounds for censure. Whatever happened to grace and dignity and turning the other cheek? I am tired of our elected officials acting like boors. Frickin grow up Steeves, Norman, et al.

Sounds to me like Maloway tried to pull some funny shit and got called on it. I guess he thought he could try and score political points by scapegoating city councillors... no reason they should take that sitting down. Maloway got what he had coming.

Between "Mr. Backbench" Jim Maloway and Lillian "Missing in Action" Thomas, it's no real surprise that Elmwood is slipping. There isn't much political leadership there at all.

Further to this, my councillor liked the idea and said that the suggestion will be mentioned to Public Works and the CAO.

Where it goes from there is out of my hands, but at least I did my part!

Just PLEASE don't tell them it was done in Calgary.

Then it will definitely get turned down to protect their egos.

Perhaps I should leave the IT industry and move into civic politics. Even with my crass cynicism I will still look like a mouse compared to some of the jokers in City Hall.
