Yea for a low skeeter forecast!

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2008/04/24/mosquitoes.html

Larvaciding or treatment of standing water will begin next week with the use of a combination of chemical and biological products.

Winnipeggers should begin to see the first flying mosquitoes of the season within a few weeks.
  1.
    I can hardly wait.
  2.
I saw my first ants on the weekend. Can the skeeters be very far behind? Perhaps this Calgary weather will slow their development.

Hmm...looks like there might be a high number of cankerworms instead. Man, those things are awful!

    http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/story/4164909p-4752781c.html

He did warn, however, cankerworm counts last fall were the second highest since records began in the 1970s.

I hope they don't screw around and start spraying for these suckers.

Portage Place now has one of those..

Freep has a video where you can listen to see if you can hear it.

pretty much. I wonder if the mosquito sound interferes with the music they listen to, or if they can drown it out.

it actually sounds like a mosquito interspersed with a high pitched tic tic tic tic tic.. at least that is what I hear...

usually background noise like that can be drowned out fairly easy.... I dont have two computers with speakers are work or I could tell you.

So there is actually something good that is coming from our cooler temps - less mozzies!

    http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/story/4170834p-4759033c.html

The cool, dry weather has meant there is relatively little standing water in which to lay eggs.
    ...
Surveillance data indicates low levels of larvae in standing water sites. Officials expect that, within the next seven to 10 days, there will be only a small emergence of spring nuisance mosquitoes. Trap count data can be viewed at the Insect Control website at Winnipeg.ca/bugline. The city is also preparing for a cankerworm control program for boulevard trees and city parks, which will start in late May or early June, weather dependent.

Get your umbrellas out folks, because they're now prediciting that this will be the peak of the cankerworm cycle! Ick.

    http://www.winnipeg.ca/cao/media/news/nr_2008/nr_20080522.stm#1

The Insect Control Branch is forecasting a significant cankerworm population in Winnipeg over the next few weeks which will likely have the potential to cause major defoliation of American Elms, Manitoba Maple and Ash trees in many parts of the City where there are large stands of these trees. These populations generally follow a natural five to seven year cycle and have been building up their populations over the past couple of years. Based on previous historical data, the Branch anticipates that this may be the peak of this cycle.

when i was growing up in northern ontario we had an infestation of tent catipillars (which sound like the exact same thing). It was disturbing. they were all over the place and they spun webs, so you couldn't go anywhere near trees. I remember golfing and it looking like the green was moving because there literally was 100's of 1000's of these things on it....the roads were covered in blood.
