Tom Flanagan, April 24 page A15 - Comment
"If we don't enforce our existing laws against polygamy, we will jeopardize the fundamental institution of our free society and constitutional government."

You know what drives me crazy, is statements in someone's article that state something that is out and out, "facts not in evidence"!
The whole statement is nonsense. The laws on polygamy are basically unconstitutional, as the crown has been told. The Costitution Act of 1982, "without discrimination based on religion" , and that says it all.
The crown prosecutors have been told that the likelihood of a successful prosecution is negligible. They won't waste money trying a law that won't work.

This has nothing to do with the US grabbing 416 kids from the Mormon sect and claiming that they are being exploited. They will have a good shot at that one, after about 5 years or so of litigation.

I think polygamy is insane. I mean, who'd want more than one mother-in-law????

I'm surprised at the lack of discussion on this topic. Why should I care how many wives my neighbour has? If men and women wish to enter into these relationships who cares? I honestly don't get why the government would spend one ounce of energy on polygamy.

Forcing children to marry before 18 is a different subject. The government needs to enforce laws that protect children. But that is a different topic for a new thread.

If your wives are all sisters, you avoid that problem ;-)

I wonder what the tax benefits of such a situation would be....

I personally think that having more than 1 wife would be extremely taxing, if I use my experience over the last 39 years, 8 months , 11 days , 1 hour and 17 minutes, but who is counting?

Sounds like a life sentence with no eligibility for parole.
  5.
That profit dude from Creston was interviewed on TV but abrubtly ended the interview when he admitted he'd married some wives when they were barely 16. That SOB should be in jail.

One could make the leap that any child being held to their parents' religious views is being exploited, i.e. My father used to cheer on the Toronto Maple Leafs when he was alive

Polygamy is a choice, but having children marry under the age of 18 should be illegal. Having said that, many will still choose to marry at a young age if that is what they are taught is 'God's Way'.

Since we aren't monogamous by nature, whats wrong with polygamy.

We aren't? The number of people willing to share their spouses are quite low.

I would say that we are monogamous by nature even though we don't necessarily stay with the same person the entire time.

The profit dude said he had enough wives so that he didn't have to chase after someone else's. What a man.

Who's talking about sharing, i'm just talking about "stepping" out on ones spouse, and that is at an all time high. nay, mankind is as monogamous as a chimp.

Considering that humans exist on a 1:1 male female ratio it makes sense that we procreate in a similar manner.

Why is it that polygamists are always one male to multiple women? Can women have multiple husbands in the FLDS church?

How does a cult like that exist if the children are generally an even split when it comes to boys and girls? Is there a bunch of single men that never get married in the FLDS church?

oh... and why should be prosecute polygamy? seriously... if they were smart enough to just not actually marry.. it would be perfectly legal...
