I'm starting to dream about my next adventure, and have my sights set on France and Spain (and maybe Germany, depending on time).

Does anyone have any tips or "must see"s? Things and places to avoid? Experiences to share?

A couple of years back I went to the south of France ( Cannes Nice Monaco) - fabulous. Pricey in tourist season because all the well heeled come from around the world but off season (Nov. we were there) very reasonable and uncrowded as restaurants and bars just do whatever they have to to tie themselves through until tourist seasoN.

Just hanging out by the ocean and the seaside port towns like Antibes were entertainment in themselves. Rent a car and drive around Monaco and you'll never get on a ride at the Ex again - too boring !

AlonG the south, not too far from Nice, were great artists villages in the mountains. Old medieval towns that were made pedestrian only and rented by artists. You can spend all day wandering around them. Quite neat. I don't think I had a digital camera there so no pics but I'd definitely go back

Man, we should have a planning club or something. I'll be going there this fall with my wife. Spain/France/Portugal probably. I would like to take a trip across the channel to Morocco for a day, but who knows..

Too funny! Then at least us planners can share what we find :)
I too plan on going sometimes Sept/Oct to avoid the flock of tourists and the heat.

I know for sure I'll be doing a bike tour (self-guided), as the idea of riding around and visiting wineries sounds like an excellent way to see the countryside!

You sure this is a good idea? Too many wineries = fall down go bump...
3.
especially on some of those teeny tiny single lane roads with tow way traffic that think they're F1 drivers !

Hmm....so you're saying it would make me appreciate Winnipeg's traffic? :)

"Too many wineries = fall down go bump... "
Pft to that idea. Visit winery and get tipsy, get on bike and sober up, get to winery and get tipsy, get on bike and sober up, repeat until day ends.

At least that'd be a day or two. I'm thinking the slower pace would make for some excellent photography!

I'll have to add another "to do" for my trip preparation.
- learn how to swear/curse en francais

Don't use French-Canadian swear words. They only make French people laugh, or at least think you're trying to find a church. Try words like "putain" "merde" or "con".

Oddly, I'll be in France and Spain the last week of July first two weeks of August this summer too. I'm really looking forward to Madrid, considering I never knew much about it - the modern architecture there is really incredible and by European standards, the hotels are amazingly affordable.

Heh. A list of Quebecois swear words reads like a church's inventory :)
