    apparently Natives are planning on disrupting the Vancouver Olympics ala the way that the world is reacting to the Olympics in China because of China's treatment of Tibetans.

    Does anyone on here believe we even come close to treating Natives the way Tibetans are treated? Doesn;t the government actually treat Treaty Natives better then most non treaty canadians? Think about it, they have every single right and ability that every other person has, plus the Treaties give them additional rights on top of that. Are conditions on reserves bad? Some... hell yeah... who is it again that controls the resources and money's on those reserves? could it perhaps... be themselves?

    Bingo. The natives should be picketing themselves. Our $8 billion(ish) annual investment goes where? Then again I've no idea how bad the Chinese handle the Tibetans... Does China invest $8 billion(ish) in Tibetans?

    When I read and hear comments like "in a short period the Chinese authorities will destroy all evidence by executing the innocent Tibetans", I think not.

    Maybe we should start a government sponsored program whereby any leader that professes his people are treated as bad as such and such.... that we actually send them there to live for a year?

    and no Jimmy... you cant say that you are treated as bad as hugh hefner.

    SOME natives are. On this site, for some reason, we love to lump natives into a bunch as if they're some nameless homogeneous group of people.

    China probably does invest money in Tibet.

    But don't tell me you don't see the parallels: land disputes, poverty, charismatic national leader...

    By the way, the AFN has endorsed the Vancouver Olympics. And yes, First Nations poverty is that bad. I'll paraphrase Yude Henteleff: We have our own third world.

    If our government had any smarts, and they do not, they would follow China's example, force the Indians to sign an agreement, as China did in 1951, and then there would be a lot less problem with the INDIANS!

    I hope we don't have to "rehash" anything. Money is useless without the right attitude and the right plan. And there's no garuntee that money gets to the people who need it. (There are people without money who live healthy, fulfilling lives but our economic system does not support this) If impoverishment could just be fixed with money, we would have fixed it by now.

    Dean you strike me as you have a bone to pick, that is fine so do they. Not that they are blamless but they have got the deal they got from us WHITE ANGLO SAXONS . The poverty is never ending as the researves are not allowed to claim there own resources as collateral on loans and banks are afraid to lend to them. The list is endless just didn't like the way you attack them out of fear.

    Its not that the reserves are not allowed to claim their own resources as collateral jim, its that on the chance that they default... the Bank cant take the collateral.

    As Jim and Munchin point out, a factor that many people on this forum chooses to overlook constantly is that, regardless of whose fault it is, regardless of who is to blame... ...the living conditions for Canada's first nations people are deplorable, and a black eye on the face of our country.

    And some of you won't acknowledge that we have our own third world?

    Don't take our word for it-- do some demographics studies-- look at population pyramids, dental health stats, caloric consumption, life expectancy, literacy rates, violent death rates (and death rates in general, which, btw, are not an "everybody dies" kind of thing-- the avg per 1000 people in a year says a lot about a population). Compare them to the rest of the country. Compare them to Bangledesh.

    Is it "third world"? Not exactly, no... but it's a perpetual underclass--underfed, less educated, more prone to health problems, violent deaths, rape, assault, and so on.

    I find it strange how so many people get so incredibly upset and ruffled about aboriginal "whining", yet the living conditions of our country's first nations people barely raises a ripple.
