Hard to say, as we don't have any cliffs in Winnipeg. :)

And I don't think a moral code based on situational ethics is very practical.

I thought I would try and correct a few minor errors reported here. The $1 million dollars to be spent hiring white lawyers wasn't going to be band money, it was to be a loan from that great South American leader, Hugo Chaves.
Banks won't loan money to natives on reserves, as they have no right of seizure on the land, hence, a loan to pay for a house cannot be secured with the property. In the rest of Canada , when a bank loans against the value of the house, and payments default, the Bank takes control of the security and sells off the house. The Banks rarely lose any money on homes, as they loan only 75% of the value, or else there is house insurance for the balance.
Security for purchases is a problem for some bands because some ofthe individual bands have proven themselves incompetent in managing their expenses. A glaring example is the attempt of Macdermit lumber to collect a $2,000,000 debt for building materials. I think the story said it took 2 years of legal fighting to get money from the bands bank account. With payment stories like that, who could trust anything from the bands?
A recent National Post article- "many reserves are corrupt", "wretched reserve system".
Why isn't the system being "improved"? I read recently some of the changes, regarding fiscal responsibility, and having audited financial results, to identify where the money from Ottawa was being spent, was being fought by, surprise, surprise, the band leaders.
We all know that many of the band leaders are looking after themselves and their friends. What is galling is to have a system, where checks and balances are not in place!
Without those checks , you could have band members paying out $40 million in advertising expenses, and receiving nothing in return!

Especially if one's moral code is a heartless one that involves not helping other people.

No one can solve problems for someone when they start with racist stereotypes.

Truly, Route71, I believe you are a good person at heart. But you are blinded by ignorance. I reccommend volunteering at a drop-in centre or something like that.

well said. much nicer than my comments... :)

it's too easy to draw broad stereotypes when you don't know those you speak of as inviduals.

I thought the main purpose of newwinnipeg was to be able to slander politicians, federally, provincially and locally? After that we were to work on any group that requires more money to solve all of their problems, and then finally if we have run out of targets, we were to criticise all comments or people advocating a better treatment of the NORTHEND!

Isn't that written up in the previous thread on how we are to act on newwinnipeg.com?
    Have I got it wrong??

Another example of a First Nations group thinking outside the box - the Tsawwassen First Nation.

I was reading an article about the Chief Kim Baird, who was elected at a very young age (early 20s). She grew up on the reserve in poverty and then went to live in Vancouver. She graduated from high school, where no one else on her reserve did. She moved back to the reserve with the desire to bring her people out of poverty, and the chief at the time basically stepped down and endorsed Kim as a true leader. She was one of only a few women chiefs at the time as well.

She also brought her reserve to the end of the treaty process. If wasn't easy, there was a ton of controversy, but they at least got through the process. In the end they got more land and some startup cash, and they give up all other land claims and will soon be taxed.

What the First Nations in Canada needs is more progressive leaders from their community such as Kim. Then they could start pulling themselves out of poverty.

As for the First nations vs Tibet comparison, there's another major difference - natives can vote here. If they wanted to make change they could elect some of their people into the House and make change. Tibetans don't have the same right.

    From the Sun...

A CFS authority wants to spend $140,000 on an ad campaign to counter media coverage last fall which it feels led some members of the public to believe "devolution was a devastating mistake."

A draft document uncovered by the Opposition Tories from the First Nations of Northern Manitoba CFS Authority proposes to spend cash on a campaign showcasing aboriginals as educated, capable parents. The campaign is in response to coverage which, according to the document, led some members of the public to believe "First Nations people were uneducated, unskilled, and unable to care for their children."

"We were discussing how there are these stereotypes that have been applied to the authority and how devastating they can be. We wanted to alleviate people's concerns about First Nations people being able to take care of their own children," Northern Authority communications manager Rhonda Gordon Powers said yesterday.

The $138,900 for the campaign -- a "very rough estimate" -- would come from the communications budgets of the agencies under the authority's umbrella and would not detract from front-line services, she said.

This kind of nonsense must end. Is it any wonder the hand is always out asking for more? What right-minded person would even consider this asinine initiative?

Was listening to an old native woman lament the flooding for hydro in Labrador on the CBC. She went on about the usual native issues, trees, animals, fishing hunting and yes, her yearly canoe trip up the river. Her son supporterd her lament but said he was a realist. he said if they want to flood for hydro OK, but they will have to PAY.

If the United Church is really a front for the Illuminati, then the majority of Winnipeggers are probably Illuminati members. We're surrounded!
