Katz hopes that stores will respect the new bylaw banning spray paint for minors. This is so outrageous! Perpetrators of vandalism don't care if their spray paint is from a legal source. What's next: a ban on permanent markers?

I've said this before, but youths can't legally buy cigarettes, yet that doesn't stop them from smoking. This isn't any different.

This isn't even mentioning that people over 18 tag as well.

This bylaw is pretty pointless, I think we can all agree on that.

I agree as the property owner I should be able to shoot you or break your arm kick you nuts in you get the point. Course thats why you chicken sh--- do it at night .

The simple solution to your property being tagged, and unfortunitely it is a pain in the butt, is to keep a gallon of paint and immediately cover up the tag. Do that and the tagger will skip your property as his advertisement would be covered up.
The city has a program, I believe in repainting tagged properties.
When someone tagged my business door on Corydon Avenue,, I painted it out the next day.

I've used acetone to remove spray paint and felt marker...works well. You have to be carefull with it though.

    Are you from Texas?:)

I understand your frustration but you need to relax dude.

There are some differences between cigarettes and spray paint:

    1. The purpose of cigarettes is smoking; the purpose of spray paint is not vandalism.
    2. I believe it is illegal for youths to possess spray paint; it is not illegal for youths to possess cigarettes.
    3. Lighting a spray paint can is much more deadly.

Forget the graffiti hotline. Rosencrentz has it right - keep a gallon of paint around and if you get tagged, cover it up same day.

Perhaps the city should start handing out free water soluble spray paint cans and chalk to graffiti taggers.

Some people feel that they live in a world where their voice and aspirations are stifled by an oppressive power structure. Graffiti is a way of challenging that power structure and making something "mine" instead of "theirs".

INAL, but I since the bylaw only prohibits the sale of spray paint, you could get away with giving it away for free. It is interesting to note that the bylaw does not mention any punishments for violation.

nope. you cant give it to minors either..but.. you are right the bylaw itself contains no means of punishment.,

"Possession of spray paint by minors prohibited
    4. A minor may not have spray paint in his or her possession in a public place unless the
minor is under the supervision of a parent, guardian, school teacher, employer or other adult in
    a similar relationship."

For teh record...the city of Winnipeg Charter provides for the punishment,
  8.
I know that it would still be illegal for them to possess, but I'm guessing if the distributor gave it away for free, there would be no penalty for the distributor.

Sort of o topic...I wish "taggers" would respect certain items. Used to be that if you did a mural the unspoken rule was not to paint over someone else'sw painting. That's gone out the widnow now - even the decades old historic signs that I photograph I notice mjore and more of them are being tagged over. That's a shame.
