Tom waits is on my short list of "shows you would pay upwards of $100 to see." Rush and Iron Maiden were also on that list, and so was Tom Petty... so with my luck this year, maybe Mr. Waits will indulge us with his presence and leave me with an ever-lightening wallet.

I think he visits Minneapolis sometimes. Definitely on my list of must see.

My point was that events like Sled Island or Pemberton are different from festivals like the Calgary Folk Festival in that they are a collection of individual concerts - the US "festival" model - rather than a collection of musicians interacting. I have been to the Calgary Folk Festival many times, as well as Edmonton (which I don't like as much) and Winnipeg (ditto).

I am pleased that there is another event bringing indie music to western Canada - the spin off is that Jose Gonzalez is coming to Winnipeg next week! - just saying that I prefer a festival where more stuff happens than just a bunch of bands one after another. I wouldn't turn the other down, just having my druthers.

As for Tom Waits, Pehdtsckjmba! www.tomwaits.com

New Pornographers played a pretty mediocre show at Pantages tonight. I've never seen a rock show there, and I think I now know why...the sound wasn't so hot.

Metallica with Metal Church were pretty hot at Pantages. Ditto for the Hoodoo Gurus. It all depends on who is doing the sound, I guess.

Drive-By Truckers at The Garrik were outstanding. Incredibly high energy sustained over a pretty long set.

Cool. What was the turn out?

Don't know the numbers, but it was sparse. Would have been an ideal West End show.

With the West End out of commission for a while, is another similar-sized venue moving in to take those shows?

Coldplay has outright cancelled their concerts for Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and a second concert in Toronto.

Ticketmaster has leaked the tour dates for Against Me!'s fall tour.

Winnipeg is September 10th at the Garrick. These dates are not announced anywhere yet, but the presale starts tomorrow. Does anyone have a presale password? It's a Union event, they normally email me their presales, but I've got nothing on this and I won't miss this show for anything.

It will be interesting to see how well this sells. He played the old arena about 20 years ago. Didn't go then, likely won't go now.
