"Billion" is clearly a mistake.

Anyway, while this WRHA announcement is good news in that it will build on other efforts to revitalize a rather tired-looking portion of Portage Avenue, I doubt it'll make much of an impact on the surrounding area.

Maybe it also includes all the community health centres they're building?

I'll try to find a link...

From the story, the province has spent $35B since '99 on capitol projects.

The entire provincial budget is only about $8 billion a year, so to have spent $35 billion since 1999, that would mean that that approximately half of every single dollar spent by the Province of Manitoba in the last decade must have been spent on building new facilities for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

    It is not billions!!

It must have been a reference to all capital projects, including roads, bridges, the water treatment plant, etc...

    Even that is unlikely...

to hit 30 billion in 10 years.. when in the last 2 only roughly one billion has been spent ( keep in mind that includes the MASSIVE floodway project ) .. that leaves 29 Billion over 8 years... not likely at all.

This does not seem correct DeanK. The floodway, Manitoba Hydro Building and the Airport alone exceed these figures no?

Mr_Point...........what hours do you work next week? I will be in Point Douglas at the J.R. Watkins building for 3 days next week, from 8 to 3 PM. If you still wanted a look around inside the building I'll sacrifice one lunch hour.

On my recent travels I kept an eye out for old cinemas to see what other cities have done.

I came back with a strengthened resolve that the WRHA building is not a good fit and that the Starland should remain with the potential to be used as a venue someday. At the very least the Starland should be incorporated into the design with perhaps some space there for public use and other for the WRHA.

What I noticed, whether it be in parts of the Lincoln Park neighbourhood or the famed 6th strip in Austin was that these weren’t gentrified areas like the Exchange is becoming – they were more like that strip of Main. Grungy, buildings in poor condition. A mix of clubs, pubs, little theatres, shops and galleries. The clientele were business people, students, tourists and homeless folk.

They reminded me of that part of Main. The artists have moved there from places like the Exchange for cheap rent and studio / gallery space and the area has taken on life of its own.

I have pics of other old theatres that still have life in them as community galleries / theatres etc. and even a couple that were gone but the facades remained and had offices and one even a parkade behind it
One place I wanted to point out was the Ritz on 6th in Austin. Again, the scene was very similar to Main Street and the cinema fell into disrepair to the point that the old owners did not even use the theatre portion. The main floor was a bar. New owners took it over, renovated and made it into a bar / restaurant / cinema ! You entered a small lobby where there was a counter, you paid for your movie and could order your first drink and your food (or you could order it from your seat). The interior was converted to have a row of chairs and a row of tables. It had a mix of films (Juno and Ferris Bueller were playing the day I was there) and they had special movie nights at and festivals. Quite neat I thought.
