Based on the photoshops , the area is trying to set a standard for buildings, not sure what you call this type of cookie cutter architecture but if the wall on the Dominion Bank bldg is any indication, its going to be ugly and it'll be there for decades. you know, something as simple as mandating that the Starland sign or any sign be refurbishedsd and reattached to whatever structure is built isn't the end of the world. The signs may distract your eye from the crap behind it.
I'm still waiting for the Crocus sign to come down, that crap is always in view. Is good taste ( or lack of ) an inbred trait on the prairies. You can't discoun't that possibility
Mmmm... sure can't wait to use that parking lot. The city needs more of em I tell ya. Hell, let's level downtown and put in one big parking lot. Lack of parking, after all, is what is keeping people from coming downtown... uh, wait. What just happened. Who typed that?
I think there's a budding thesis for someone here. How to take an area that's just starting to undergo a bit of a change at the grass roots and completely bugger it up.

Hmmm.. big, shiny new building. Entire locks razed. Parkades. The wrong types of buildings for the area. Attracting people for limited hours only . I wonder if that's been tried allong that strip of Main as a redevelopment project........ (cue flashback harp music)....

Hideous buildings, but perhaps that was modernism of the day. They tried. Issue I have is that they are repeating it, and thats uncreative. If architecture could describe a place, those 3 or 4 that make up City Hall , scream Serbian winter.
Developing something on Main Street for decades has been a "do something - ANYTHING" proposition. Whether that meant: tearing down many square blocks for the Civic Centre or Centennial Centre; razing blocks for pipe dreams that never happened like tower 2 and hotel for Trizec or the second tower of the TD Centre; or having empty lots the sit for decades on a main thoroughfare like the MacIntyre block lot or Logan and Main.

Main Street, I guess, has for a century now always suffered from an image issue that's drummed into the psyche of everyone, including those at city hall. Regardless of how bad an idea it is well, hey, it's only Main Street. A century ago they felt the same way because it catered to Jews, Slavs and other lowly immigrants. Today just switch aboriginal for immigrant but some of the socioeconomic issues and the way people feel about it are similar. Main will likely always get a raw deal and piss-poor choice of redevelopment options.
They just didn't fit and as a result the benefits were never seen.
I'm supposed to be getting a call the day before it goes. If I do I will post it. The bad thing about the wooden wall in front of it now is that it will be hard to get a good view of the front. I liked the cowboy way they did the Starland. A bit of chain link and you take your chances !
Interesting pic - what is it ?

Word is, Thursday am they begin and are aware of the false facade and will see what they can do about getting it off.
