Posted By: buflyerhere's a bit of history on the TD Centre, circa 1987, what was knocked down to build it. And they never did build that second tower.... interesting perspective now for this discussion on the theatres

See, now that to my mind was a tragic mistake - perfectly functional buildings were demolished to make way for a building that could have easily gone elsewhere. Even the Eaton's demolition was easier to swallow in comparison given the potential difficulty in renovating and marketing such a massive building. I doubt there would have been similar problems with the buildings formerly occupying the NW corner of Portage & Main.

I think the city holds at least some responsibility. They need to act more quickly on deadbeat landlords so that buildings don't have as great a chance to fall apart. I mean how many buildings in the city are in such a state?
  1.
What are some other ones that are in complete disrepair at the moment? I know the one next to the A&B Sound Building on Portage is pretty much in ruins. What are some other great buildings that could end up like the Starland and Epic?
  2.
The city is taking Man-Shield Construction to court over the botched demolition I see.

There's the Ryan block, the Avenue building and the old church in Osborne village to name a few.

And don't forget the MacIntryre Block that had to come down for the TD Centre as well:<br>

Didn't the McIntyre Block come down way before the TD Centre development began? I don't think it occupies the same parcel of land. That was a sweet building, though. It would've been great to have it around now.

Fortunately there aren't too many buildings in disrepair around downtown these days...a decade ago there were a few, but many have been renovated since then. The Avenue Building is the only really prominent example. There are other vacant buildings like the Met and the Union Bank Tower, but they are still heated and kept in reasonably good shape.

79-80 it came down. It was for the second tower for TD and it was said that they wouldn't go ahead without it if memorys serves correct. Sort of like the single tower Trizec needed a couple of sqaure blocks for the two office towers and hotel tower.

The second TD tower was supposed to go up at the corner of Portage and Notre Dame - where the plaza is now. At least that's what all the original renderings show. I believe that's why the 50s-era TD Bank branch there was demolished.

Yes, it seemed to have petered out in the 90's. Every once in a while I think that I should contact them and say that I'll send them some of mine but keep forgetting to call them - I am usually looking stuff on it in the wee hours of the morning !

I can't believe youtube has all this great stuff! Thanks to jaworskij for putting this great news clips up. Here is a great period piece about Portage Place, opening day, 1987. Look for the great big glasses on everyone, newscast by Sandra Lewis and Mike McCourt. Also, the governments can buy the land back for ONE LOONIE in 2062, it was leased! Now I have a reason to live to 101. Wonder what a Loonie will be worth in 2062? Development cost is $80 million.
So here's what was knocked down, 5 blocks, including a block for Investors Group building. I remember going to the old Colony Theatre across from the Bay. What is the exact count on lost Theatres???

heres a clip with before and after shots, plus comments from business's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-UlRHmcjYI

its true that the city hung on to these properties a long time .... but i dont think they wanted them to operate as theaters of any sort ... so they let them rot ..
surely i am not the only person in all these years to suggest to CV using the property for other purposes but still be theater related.
when they told me not possible and they had better plans i took a break .. i have other stuff to do and didnt want to dedicate my life to saving STARLAND ... i just thought it would be good for the city to keep the history alive .. im sure most people that are told no just walk away.
and by the way we have used the dominion bridge building in the past as studio space .. its kind of nasty .. big but nasty

If a develolper can take our old Transcona Curling Club and turn it into condos( Terraces Of Transcona) why in blazes would it be so difficult to put a theatre to another use? Where theres a will theres a way.

A will and tons of cash. Theatre = No floors.

The place needed to come town. Was old tired and of no use. I hope they kept whatever artifacts they could. I have no problem with junk being torn down as long as the rebuild keeps with the character of a space.....does this space have any character ?

Did you see the mess they did with the Dominion building, they built a wall. Aside from putting windows in a pretty nice mural those architects have proven once again, some architects need to take a course in "good taste".
