It's not a bylaw after all, but the Downtown Winnipeg Urban Design Guidelines (PDF). And my previous post was based on hearsay, so be warned.

I have to agree with that article, all we're going to do by "upgrading" north Main is shuffle the problem elsewhere, same thing we did with the hookers. Let them be some other neighborhoods problem now, a real sad way to solve an issue.

The following is a description of a Movie Theatre designed by my Grandfather. He also designed the Uptown Theatre on Academy Road. Both these theatres were atmospehric theatres with the audience sitting inside a courtyard.

I want to travel to The Pas in this summer to see this theatre, and maybe photgraph it - for my own interest.

    Lido Theatre
    The Pas, Manitoba
220 Edwards Avenue, The Pas, Manitoba RA91L5 Canada(map)
    Status: Open
    Screens: Single Screen
    Style: Atmospheric
    Function: Movies (First Run)
    Seats: 350
    Chain: Independent
    Architect: Max Blankstein
    Firm: Unknown

The Lido Theatre was built in 1930 as one of the "Finest Movie Houses in the West". An atmospheric gem back in 1930, it retains the original auditorium to this day. One of the oldest atmospheric theatres that are still operating in Canada. The Lido Theatre is independently operated and has always been. One of the only known fourth generation movie houses in Canada. Today the Lido Theatre remains a hub of cinema entertainment in The Pas, Manitoba, Canada. A first run movie house that is truly one of a kind. Complete with an orchestra pit and backstage dressing rooms.

Welcome aboard macart ! That's cool. I will definitely check that out if I am up in The Pas. Was your grandfather a Winnipegger or get training elsewhere and come here to design buildings ?

I was wondering how many similarities there are/were between the Lido and the Uptown theatres since they were both designed by Max Blankstein in the atmospheric style and built approximately at the same time, although the Uptown is reported to have opened a year later, in 1931. Has the Lido's seating capacity always been 350. The seating capacity of the Uptown was around 1500.
Also did Max Blankstein have any connection to the Winnipeg architectural firm of Green Blankstein & Russell? GB&R were responsible for the late 1940's remodelling to the Metropolitan theatre's street level facade, new marquee, and ground floor lobby.

Yes, permit still being finalized. I have a couple of people who say they'll contact me about the Rex before it goes and I will let people know. I sent around the pics that I took re: false front and backed them up with what MrP posted of the facade so hopefully there'll be interest from others like Heritage Winnipeg and the City to at least have them take a rack at pulling back the false front before proceeding.

    hi all
i am glad to find a forum of people interested in this city... too bad i found it after they tore down starland..
i contacted center venture over a year ago about reinventing starland and the rex theater ... i wanted to use starland as a live film video production house
i would have added a carpenter shop and production offices to the south ...and i would have expanded the rex to starland creating a large openspace studio
for film and video production .. i understand that most of the rex is in disrepair .. like the balcony is unsafe , plaster falling and piles of bird waste .. but i would of gutted the rex keeping what could be saved like the awsome cieling , walls and the hand painted original screen ... i wanted to turn the oldest built for film theater in north america into a modern day film studio.
starland from what i understand was still in good shape inside and with all the work i wanted to do to the stage end most would of been replaced and updated ..
centerventure told me of the black mold ... i believe this is not disrepareable ... they told me its in such bad shape they have a hard time opening the front door... its almost 100 years old and has been closed since the 60's ... i can only shake my head..
i have found out since they tore down starland that the space between the two theaters was another theater called the colonial .. i would of loved to find details and build the front of that theater for enlarging the rex ... winnipeg needs decent film studio space and this would of been a very cool way to do it.
i think once that marque was lite up and the doors open for business people wold come ... music .. plays .. theater .. it had seating for about 1500 people
and both buildings have 40' ceilings .... after speaking to some engineers i gave them a 2.5 million ballpark price ..
well anyways what can i say i liked the idea to much ..
they said they had better plans ...
too bad so sad ... to all the people that think the clinic will clean up the area .. thats not why they put it there ... i bet not too many addicts get to see the killer view from the top floor balcony or the rest of us for that matter ... it will be very high security because of the addicts they serve .. there not going anywhere..

By the way, it doesn't sound like the overall design of the new building is going to change, even though the architects have received several complaints from various organizations. I'll keep you posted if I head anything new.

By the way, Joe Bova is involved in the project. Hmmm .. maybe it was Mr. Christian who beat him up...

CBC is reporting: New company assumes Main Street demolition contract. Rogers offered the subcontract to Imrie. Imrie says starting Tuesday it will clean up the rubble from the Starland before starting the remainder of the block and would tear down either in the wee hours or weekend.

Hmm....wonder how long it will take, considering he's waiting for the wrecking crane to come down from up North to tear down the old Able building. :P

As of last week Imrie's boys having been doing demo at Abel's, I don't think the machine is there yet but they are definitely working on the demolition.

How come nothing is being salvaged? Like those bricks.

-No re-use of old building materials
-No design guidelines for the new building
-A bad project from a downtown historical and pedestrian perpective
-One single use for a long block.... not good
-One active use from 8 Am to 5 PM M to F.... not good
-No sustainable construction approach. This is 2008 people
-No community consultation. They should re-read thier City Audit Report
-No plan to address the social issues. At least put the challenge out to the Province.

Do you think this project is doomed?
Every aspect of this project is ASS BACKWARDS.

Our City deserves better than this.

Check out who is on the Board of CV. Is it a wonder why things are unfolding as they are. I am sure all these MEN are good people. But seriously, what do they know about development and revitalization? No wonder MCgowan is limp.
