Nothing is happening today at the Starland.........the engineer at my work and I went to check it out today, he said it was quite possible demo permits had been pulled because of yesterdays wall facade collapse mishap. He said the same thing Imrie did, they should have started at the front and worked back, ah well, too late now. Could he possibly be right though about the permits?

yup that sounds like the City.

The building sit for decades, fire traps, not boarded propelry. Not one inspector lifts a finger.

All the sudden demo work starts and they are all over it.

Gotta love the reactive nature of the city, from the top all the way to the bottom.

In terms of being reactive, I think my reaction to a building falling around me would require a change of underwear.
  2.
We should protest there or something.

I was devastated to witness the wrecking equipment in action when I passed by on Thursday and I was horrified to hear about the unplanned collapse that happened yesterday.

They should have never been torn down in the first place, IYAM...

    *sigh*

Unfortunately the Rex and Starland were lost causes a long time ago; we have other beautiful classic theatres in town such as the Walker, Pantageous, and the Met(till CI) that need attention and care. It would be great to focus on them in an effort to preserve and protect. I know the Pantageous and the Walker struggle to remain operating and NEED help to stay open. Why not focus some effort there before boards go up and the wrecking ball hits.
Could you imagine loosing the Walker??

It's a shame the WECC didn't look into moving into one of the remaining theatres before all this happened.. Even the Met would have been a good choice considering it's set up to be an auditorium and has seating, a stage etc..
Last time I was at a show in the WECC I found it doesn't work very well since it's a church without seating. And only has a small area for temp seating... Besides, the WECC church building is falling apart and appears to be in worse structural condition than some of the empty remaining historical theatres! Have you ever been in the basement? There’s some major problems with that building not to mention it's a fire trap as well.
I have been to many WECC shows even worked at a few, I’m sorry but I just don’t see the appeal.

Some sort-of-good news... the design for the WRHA building is being reconsidered. Something about a bylaw requiring new buildings to be consistent with the character of the neighborhood. I will post more information when I find it.

Plan Winnipeg and the Zoning by-laws are only there to be ammended at will, or so it seems with this council anyway.

The downtown zoning by-law can be ammended to permit ugly suburban buildings.

I can't read the small print, but I guess could be concession prices rather than admission prices ;-)
