I was there for most of the day. The front walls are still up, the back 2/3 is gone. I have pics in a moment. She did put up a fight, the demo guy tried a few times to do the "whack to the wall" thing. She shook but held firm so they had to do it chunk at a time. I'd say an hour or two tomorrow and the rest will be off to Brady Road.

Was very sad to see. One of those things that I know in five years, when people are tired of the WRHA building, it will be one of those " what the f**k were we thinking" moments. Sort of like the old PO and City Hall.

As for the facade of the epic, the guys have assured someone form CV that they would peel the front off but, of course, CV doesn't own the building anymore so what does it matter. I sent emails to CV, Gerbasi, heritage Winnipeg and Giles Bukliakis about the false front thing and hoping that if they had any contacts whatsoever with this project to please reiterate the request about the front facade. I included a link to my blog item on the facades http://www.christiancassidy.com/?p=56
I am thinking we won't see the facade... ? great pic, tho!... thanks for taking them!
Daaaammmmnnnn ! Well, I guess that was her way of saying "screw you Winnipeg" !

I took one last shot at 5:12 pm as I was walking to my car. Guess this is the last shot of the facade then if it came down around 6.
Image: mrchristian

Main Street could have become that local arts capital of Canada, with ample affordable housing.
No vision. No capital. No understanding.
No vision because the community was not engaged.
No capital because this city still refuses to understand the economic issues and implement the vision with a TIF zone.
No understanding because the people in charge have no experience in revitalizing the downtown.
Just another half assed attempt at revitalization.
Thank-you for documenting another period in Winnipeg’s sad history. The pics are awsome and will speak to the truth in decades to come.
I can’t wait until this 50 + crowd of so called planners, development officials and leaders retire to Pheonix
Our city deserves better people.
Lets pray the creative professional types are still around the take charge.
Life is much easier in Seattle, Portland, Montreal, Vancouver, Australia, Europe, Carolina, Quebec, hell even Houston these days are emerging form a dark period.
Come on folks, any fool can do what is being done. It takes a leader to Know and do better.
I remember driving past there everyday and looking up to the roof to see the pigeons perching on that front facade, looking like they owned the place. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts the pigeons were not consulted by CV either!
Before I ran to get the evening shots I was going to point out that there was a little, teeny bit of the old left to see in the Starland. In the top front the plaster was still intact. Perhaps they had a “God’s” balcony that got boarded up and never renovated. It was certainly too small an area to be the actual balcony:
