South of the Starland was a hotel. I think I saw a pic of it once. I think in the 80's wasn't there a bad 60's Woolworths that became a Mostoways or something ? Nondescript blonde brick shoebox ?

I had heard that thy will try to peel the front off - someone had seen the pic I posted. I hope they DO. For the sake of a few minutes it would be great. Not exaclty sure who to ask about it - Centreventure does not own it anymore, the city has never cared about the issue at all. I did send each of them and Heritage Winnipeg a note about it (I posted tha above on my blog). Who knows !

I just found some neat old Winnipeg postcards online, some nice shots of Main Street, on the shot from the Royal Bank Tower I think I can make out the Starland, not sure though. If you're so inclined have a look.

If I remember correctly, it was Oretzki's (?) 'afore it was Mostoways.

The final of the 50 pics I shot.

This was taken sort of off the cuff as I was riding the 18 North Main - Jefferson bus on the way home.
Will have the remaining pics posted on my site within the next few hours...

The false front on the Regent is a bit of a mystery to me...why did it go up in the first place? It is so half-assed it doesn't really look like the typical ca. 1959 "let's modernize the place" project, and IIRC, it was mentioned that the false front went up a lot earlier than that.

The false front was added in 1938 when the theatre was called the Regent. It was probably considered the last word in Art Deco modernization at the time. Too bad no one realized what a gem they had with the original facade.

That hugh air vent that looks like a roman soldier's helmet is incredible imho. It should be saved and used as a piece of sculpture.

Damn, I hope it doesn't end up burried at Brady Road.

    Thanks!

This photo is looking south on Main from somewhere between Higgins and Henry Avenue. Buildings that are still standing (as of this morning) are indicated with names they're currently known as. Buildings (or portions of buildings) that have been demolished or destroyed by fire are indicated by X's.

This photo was taken before a fire destroyed the upper floors of the Bon-Accord Block on Logan and Main, where Mitchell's Fabrics is today. The fire happened around 1945 or '46. Upstairs was offices, and in the early days, like much of the area around Logan and Main, was Jewish firms. On the Logan Avenue side of this building, an ornate entrance-way still has THE BON-ACCORD etched in stone.

    Awesome pictures folks!!
Its the end of an era downtown, one more link to our past is severed. We can only hope we can preserve whats still remaining, too many were lost these last 10 years or so.

Neat, apparently the Starland sign and marquee are the city's oldest.

The West End Cultural Centre has removed slabs of marble and more than 80 chairs from the Epic Theatre to use in their redevelopment project.

I wonder what the Neon Factory plans to do with the sign. Will it be restored and displayed in their shop?

Wouldn't it be fantastic if it were restored and installed on the exterior of a building in the area? It'll never happen, but it would be a beatiful homage to what we've lost.
