There is a cost to jail people in Canada. While it might make this woman's prison sentence a little more comfortable why must Canada pay to keep her in a Canadian jail? I know this happens but under what criteria? Who decides of all the Canadians in jail outside Canada who gets to come home and who stays? I say, maybe a little less compassionately, we let them serve their sentences in the country that imprisoned them.

I am not sure, but I think that part of the problem, as perceived by bleeding heart type Canadians, is that these bleeding heart Canadians , see a problem with a system that says you are guilty unless proven innocent!
I personally think that the Mexican system is far better than ours, as is proven , when so many people charged with crimes, get out on bail, and re-offend.
That is enough proof for me.
Even though there was no shred of hard evidence, the Judge thought she was guilty , mainly because she got $60,000 as severance pay for a job that she stole from another Mexican.
If the Canadian government gets her back to serve her time, she perhaps will be given credit for her 2 years , and 3 months served, down there. That would get her out on parole right away. There is some agreement in place between the 2 countries, but what the dtails are, who knows?
I , in protest am not going to eat any Mexican tortillas.

Mono, the difference between this case and OJ, is that she has been convicted, OJ was acquitted.

by The Canadian Press, From The Winnipeg Sun

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO -- The evidence against Brenda Martin clearly shows she is guilty and, despite her supporters' complaints, the jailed Canadian was given a fair trial, a Mexican official said yesterday. "The facts and the evidence that the decision was based on show clearly that she is guilty," said Heriberto Estrada, a government lawyer with Judge Luis Nunez's office.

you mean like that Canada worked out a deal where she is found guilty does not fight it... is sent to canada to serve her time and come july she has served enough time and has been a good enough prisoner that she gets mandatory release?

nah that wont happen at all..

I thought she had severed all ties to canada and was living illegally in mexcico, also had not filed any income tax with CRA for many years ... so why would she want to come back now? maybe she should pay her back taxes first.

gee now why would she sever all ties to Canada and live illegally in Mexico? Does not happen to have legal reasons to avoid Canada does she?

And yeah.. will she be paying taxes on all the money she earned as a cook?

On one hand, I hear ya.

On the other hand, if you were in her shoes, wouldn't you do the same? Or would you be quiet about and try to not draw attention to your situation?

I have wondered about that myself...

Where are the guilty gardeners, pool boys, chauffeurs and housekeepers that probably also worked for this guy at one time or another?
