Posted By: JimmytufishHer friend can pay the fine as far as I'm concerned. I really cannot figure out the logic behind this. They (the CPC) isn't getting any points over this, so it makes no sense to me, and I've let Bernier know my feelings.

Even if they got points from it it's seems to me to be a big conflict of interest. I am not Tory-bashing as I mean this for any party (ESPECIALLY a governing one). They'll be the government representing her at extradition proceedings and then transferring her to a Canadian government run jail. She could still decide to sue the Mexican government or, hell, even the Canadian government for that matter, over how she felt she was treated. She could appeal her sentence etc. There could be a great deal of government contact that she might have down the road and having it be known that the governing party supported her financially to get into a Canadian jail is sort of like saying "I'm special".

You'd want to keep a convicted criminal (regardless of what she may or may not have done - that's what she is) at arms length - give support in 100 other ways if you want but financial reward...I dunno. That has the potential to be a "bite you in the ass" thing.
The latest "news" is that she is upset with the fact that she will have to return to Canada in handcuffs. Did someone forget to tell her that she is a convicted criminal? Leave her in Mexico already.
It's even worse than that. This woman is a piece of work. Despite the government doing cartwheels for her, she shows little gratitude and less patience. I agree with Freethinker. let her serve her sentence in Mexico.
I still think the system down there stinks and is has been so corrupt , look at the way they have handled the murders of foreigners Canadian and American . Will never go back, never did believe in Harper or the reform party he leads o yea they changed there name . Right! they are just the same as the party Brian left behind and the one Jean led .
CP OTTAWA — Brenda Martin was on her way back to Canada on Thursday after a two-year ordeal in a Mexican prison.
Martin’s lawyer confirmed she was handed over to Canadian authorities and was flying home with an escort from the Correctional Service of Canada.
Guillermo Cruz Rico said Martin, 51, was to be transferred to prison upon her return to Canada. He said she’ll likely serve several months in jail before she’s eligible for parole.
Martin was expected to arrive in Kitchener, Ont., Thursday evening where there is a womens prison.
Something tells me though that this is not the last we'll hear of her. I smell a book deal cooking........oops just about hit Add Comment when I remembered that certain criminals can't profit from their crimes, this might apply to her, not sure.

But remember, she didn't commit any crime, just ask her.

So Jim, what do you think of the Brenda Martin situation?
Well, she is back in Canada, finally, and taken to prison.
I love the biased reporting- "she was well tanned and looking relaxed". What the hell is that supposed to mean? The reporter had to be 100 yards away from her plane that our government sent down for her. Thank goodness we have Steven Harper in charge. If Martin was still the Prime Minister, he never would have sent anyone to help his "namesake". lol
IMHO, she should have been let go the moment she stepped off the plane...not one more dollar to be spent on her, and not one more second of media time either.
