The WFP just reported that a new CAO has been selected for the City:

City hires former Brandon manager as new CAO

MAYOR Sam Katz today announced today that a selection committee will recommend Glen Laubenstein as the new Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Winnipeg. Laubenstein has 30 years of municipal experience, most recently serving as the chief administrative officer for the City of Kingston, Ont.

Prior to that, he worked for eight years as the City Manager for Brandon. He also has the distinct honour of having three times led the city with the fastest-growing economy in Canada, Katz said.

"I believe Mr. Laubenstein’s knowledge and passion for city governance will benefit the citizens of Winnipeg as council works to meet our citizen’s needs," said Katz.

The position of CAO for the City of Winnipeg was left vacant following the resignation of Annitta Stenning this past September.

"I look forward to working with the Mayor, city council, and the public service to move our city forward," said Laubenstein. "Winnipeg is a city progressively moving in the right direction and I am excited to play a role in building on this momentum." Laubenstein will assume the duties of CAO in April 2008, pending a vote at executive policy committee on Wednesday.

Kingston is one of my all time favourite cities. If he can bring something from that city then excellent choice.

heh, beat me to the punch zander :)

Curious to know what this guy will be like under the current regime.
And surprised that Katz's crony Robinson didn't get the position. Interesting.

"I am looking forward to living and working in Kingston and working with Mayor Rosen, Council and staff on the initiatives currently underway," said Laubenstein.

...but, what else can a person say at such a moment? "Man, it's cold here, but the money makes up for it"? :)

Hopefully he'll attune to the Newwinnipeg community.

Hmm. Hard to know what to make of this, given that the new CAO is new to the City. Now would be an opportune time for some Brandonians to chime in with their thoughts!

He really can't say much more about positive benefits of working in Winnipeg. As for the salary comment, I would say that in comparison with other Canadian jurisdictions, the money would definately not make up for it.

Here's what was written about him.
    ____________________________

Laubenstein has 30 years of municipal experience, having managed the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray, Alta.); Richmond, B.C., and the Cariboo Regional District, B.C. He also served as a municipal treasurer, an audit accountant with the Province of British Columbia, and a manager of Industrial Acceptance Corporation.

Mr. Laubenstein is a strong believer in partnering with the private sector, not-for-profit organizations, and other government agencies. He believes that partnerships and an empowered staff are the best ways to deliver the services required in a prospering City.

Does that mean Alex is the next Director of Planning or will he be going back to the Mayors Office?

I thought Alex did actually have a background in planning. Am I confused?

According to the ad, a planning degree is not required, for the head planning job.

That'll tell you what our City feels about planning and planners.

How would you know Alex's background? Now I'm confused...

Alex was a political advisor to Katz.

Brandonians. I kinda like that. It kinda lends an air of sophistication that Brandon currently lacks.

It will take more than a nice name. Just kidding, Brandon is a nice place, growing like crazy, by Manitoba standards, at least.
