Many are saying that the US is likely to go into recession this year. What affects the US usually affects Canada, too.

Should government spending change in any way, knowing that a recession may be coming?

    Will your spending habbits change?

Hard to say how I'll behave until I can see first hand how I'm affected. Maybe I put off that mega purchase. Not sure. One of the advantages of our economy is its diversification. Much of Manitoba's output is exported to China and India or to countries that export to those markets. Much of our economy is food based and there is always demand for that.

Here's an interesting article suggesting that the predicted recession will be far from "normal".

IMHO, there will be effects felt here in Canada, and Dean says, Harper is being very careful. I'm hopeful that he remains PM during the coming months, as the alternatives scare me.

what this country needs is a leader that everyone regardless of party affiliation could support, understand and work with,

Our leader needs to be elected seperate from our MPs.

IMO, one of the biggest reasons for the problems in the States is their involvements in so many wars at this time. It's a hugh drain on their economy.

Wars are really good for some areas of the economy.

Isn't that where income tax came from, as well?

    WWI or WWII?

Apparently that exceeds the 50% all caps threshold. Hilarious.

If DeanK's skate record is a success it might be just the first in a long line of achievements. If you look at the country as one long skate chain....

I thought than an excess of production caused the 50's boom as all those war factories converted to other commodities, and advertising techniques really took off...

there was a lot of government money dumped on to soldiers and workers during the war that never "existed" before the war. This money had to be spent somewhere so it became its own driving force as more people wanted to buy stuff... more jobs became available which caused more people to have money... and so on.
