I saw this in the news today about the proposed Cable car across the Red to connect the U of M with St. Vital.

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2008/01/07/gondola.html

    Interesting to say the least.

My preference would still be a pedestrian bridge. It would cost more but would be operation 24 Hours a day, and people could walk their dogs over it. It would also fit in nicer with an Active Transportation Strategy.

Why not just increase the frequency of buses that go to the U of M from St. Vital Mall instead of building a massive Gondola over peoples' homes?

    Any thoughts?

I really like the idea. Wouldn't that be neat? I can't see it happening all the way to St. Vital Centre, tho'. Dunno if I'd want that flying over my house 500 times a day.

And why not increase the buses? Because buses aren't cool. And they're traffic, albeit not as bad as individual cars.

Oops, did I start an unnessary thread?...or are we not supposed to revive old threads? I'm so confused now.

Nah, don't worry about it. You can start new ones or revive old ones, whatever you want. :D

CBC radio this afternoon indicated a footbridge wasn't cost feasible, but the cable car/gondola might be worked into the Transit budget and thus get provincial funding.

I like the idea of a Gondola in Winnipeg, but I think it probably should be in a more high profile place where tourists may want to visit. No offense to St. Vital or the U of M. It could be good though...I guess your right about buses being uncool Jupitergal. Gondolas are pretty cool.

You think residents near some of the shorter routes would mind if tourists cut through their neighbourhood to see it. Would tourists really be a concern?... Maybe that is just my paronoia.

That's what it sound like. The $3 Million dollar options are allright...My opinion of this project is waffling. Cool and Cheap...I never thought is was a bad idea...now I'm starting to warm up to it. All in 20 minutes.

Gondolas would also be quicker. Why sit on a bus for 20 minutes when you can ride across the river in three?

Not sure I would attempt to walk across the red river in November.

A gondola would be cool...a high-speed one would be cooler though.

Put one down Portage avenue from Polo Park to the Bay....big, winterized ones.

I just don't understand how a gondola can be cheaper than a bridge. Are they looking at the long-term expense, including continuous feeding of money into operating the thing, plus the union salarys?

Winnipeggers dream about a Mercedes and then wake up to find a Cavalier in the driveway. Maybe one day I will take a LRT home from the Jet's game, and then hop on to a gondola that will take me to an IKEA, where I can buy furniture for my office in the new 44 story office tower that GWL is going to build downtown.
