I can't believe people are willing to give up their freedoms so quickly. For those who say they have nothing to hide if they don't break the law please let me know what your address is so i can train a camera on each window in your house, as well as have a car with a camera follow you all day- of course remaining outside of any private locations, but following into any public locations.
I think it would be quite the experiment to see what any of those who are for this legislation would do.

Any crime that people commit is a horrible thing, and to those who think that a camera will deter crime stop and think for a second. These are people that are committing an act that is incorrect, do you honestly think that they will look around first for a camera before committing it ?

The police just caught two people that killed a kid in a stairwell as a direct result of a camera. 'Nuf said imo.

There is a huge difference between videotaping my windows and the corner of River and Osborne. That is such an extreme position I'm kinda surprised I've bothered responding.

What most are advocating is that people in public places do not expect privacy. And as such, aren't against surveillance cameras. That said if such cameras do not DETER crime but aid in the CAPTURE of criminals then I'm all for it. And when the criminals discover that more and more bad guys are getting caught and sent to jail as a result of these cameras, then yes, eventually they will reconsider their acts at those locations.

Well then clearly the solution is to put up cameras everywhere, bedrooms included, just think of all the domestic abuse we could capture. To heck with peoples rights, safety is more important right ?

At home I expect privacy. In public...well..by definition, I do not. If someone expects privacy in public, I suggest that they require a head-shake to figure out the difference.

what about a camera that points at your bedroom and your house ? You alright with that ?

Why would a camera be pointing at your bedroom... I don't understand the context.

There's a law against 'stocking' I believe, and this would fall into such a catergory.

Btw, it one hellava' big jump to go from cameras in public places to cameras pointing at individual houses isn't it ? How is the the next logical step?

well crimes will no longer happen in public places so unless crimes stop entirely where are they going to happen ?

In your bedroom? You think?
5.
I don't think we will be looking at places to put cameras if crime rates go down because of cameras in public places. That is a leap of logic I'm unwilling to accept.

Caspian- Whomever says those cameras are for deterring crime only, misses the effectiveness of the camera, completely! Those cameras are a record of who was where, and when, so when a guy drops his pants in front of a 17 year old (or older) waitress, at a coffee shop at 3 A.M., the ass whole is able to be identified, and charged, and removed from the streets!
Are we breaking his right to privacy?? Absolutely not! The guy is out in public!
Pointing a camera at all of my doors and windows? If I needed that kind of protection, and there are some people, not necessarily around here, but certainly at the Ottawa residence of the Prime Minister, as no one likes Harper, and we know how good the RCMP security isn't, (Chretian almost killed by maniac)!
There is so much good that these surveillance cameras are doing, that we could post time after time, records of the good that they are doing , as an aid to crime identification.

When the London subway bombers, blew up the subway, the British were able to identify them, and backtrack the film to where they lived.
Expectation of privacy! Baloney!! We have a greater right to our expectation of security, and in this day of suicide bombers, complaining about everything , we need to be able to identify these threats, and remove them!
The security fence in Israel, has made it safe for the public, in that the suicide bombings have been reduced to no bombings where the fence is up and built! Security is whatever works!!
I love watching the cop car cameras, recording the drunk drivers, the drivers that are trying to evade them, and in some cases the abusive policemen, but in more cases the criminal activity recorded on tape, so that law enforcement officers have a back up to what they have had to face trying to protect our right to security when we are out in public places!
More cameras to get street gang members off the streets and into jail, where they are not a threat to anyone!
Twice my wife has parked downtown, and twice she has had her car window broken. Both times in the same area. I would love to have that on tape and the person arrested. That area near Broadway and Main street is not safe, and now I have to drive her to her stupid Assiniboine Park Conservatory flower meetings when they are held downtown. It is not fair to have to spend more time with her, as we have been married 39 1/2 years!!
Where is my right to have some peace and quiet in the early evening??
7.
Oh my God...39 1/2 years...she must be a saint. :) In a couple of years the Muse will be able to walk on water (in the summer) for having put up with me for over 25.

You do realize how absurd this sounds don't you?

I've been a life-long bachelor and I'm amazed I've put up with myself for all those years!
10.
Only 25- you started out way too late! My Mom told me it "gets better after 7"!

It is only this last year that I realized that she must have meant 7 wives!

Of course I do I was using it to point out how absurd I think some of the posts on here are. Anyone who is willing to give up something at any cost in my opinion is not acting rational.

Then just say that.

I wouldn't say it's at any cost. As a matter of fact, it's at no cost to anyone.

Expecting privacy in public is not rational.
