I have been a listener for some time and was interested in the broadcasting school, does anyone know people that have gone to the ABC school in polo park, would be nice to know if it is worth the money.

I do. Everett Martin, a former News Director here (when we did news) went there. Don't have a contact number/email for you though.

Run. Run far, far away.
The industry knows that ABC grads aren't prepared when they come out of that course. I know this because I took it. I spent 8 grand to work my way up the hard way anyway.
My old roommate went to the school of broadcasting. I'm sure he had a hell of a time but finding a job after was not simple. It cost him many thousands of dollars for the courses, and then was unable to find any work. They called him a few months later and told him there was work in either Portage la Prairie or Thunder Bay... both offers he turned down. I wouldn't go into to ABC expecting to find some glamourous work upon completion.

Does he expect to start off at the top? If so, then he is a fool. It's his own fault for turning down a job. What were his reasons?
You have to start somewhere, even if it's in a place you don't want to be. This is necessary if you want to get anywhere with your career.
I will most likely have to do some time in Fort MacMurray, THE HOLE OF THE EARTH ! But if it helps my career, then I will do it. You need to make sacrifices. Depending on his reasons for turning down the job, chances are he just didn't want to leave the city, right?
You're absolutely right, his reasons were he didn't want to leave the city for a 'hole' like Portage or TB. I agree the decision was not smart, but I was just trying to make a point that people need to realize they won't find their dream job right after finishing their program.
That blog is pretty funny considering that the guy who wrote it was fired by the station after less than 2 months, just as he has been fired from every other paid media job he has held. This is a guy that is suposedly so concerned with acountability and transparacy yet he hides behind others and lets them make submissions to the commission because they have already dismissed him as nothing more than a former disgruntled employee.
The author of that blog was seen at the hearing with the group that made thier complaint, coaching them on testimony then patting them on the back after they were done. My what a reputable journalist he is.
I suggest that anyone interested check out the official CRTC website for the real story of what happened at the hearing, and not rely solely on the biased rants of a person that was fired by the company.
Nice try. Your smear campaign against me stops right here.
First off stop lying about my employment history on this website already.
1) I was fired for demanding my paycheque and refusing to work for $5.00 an hour as part of the illegal format change. I won a labour board case as did 2 other employees. In total we were owed almost $15,000. (Jesus I wasn't even fired in less than 2 months, what a lie that is you are spreading.) 2) Never fired from 1290 either when they changed formats in 1999. So you are o-for-2. 3) Which submissions to the CRTC are you talking about ? 4) Unless you are with the CRTC you have no idea if I have been "dismissed" with my information or not, and I can tell you unequivacally you are incorrect. 5) Who saw me do what at the hearing, speaking of "transparency". 6) "Check out the official CRTC website" - both the mandatory orders and the call for hearing, are linked in the blog post. 7) For those interested in the 2006 "real story", here is the link to the transcript. http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/transcripts/2006/tb0929.htm 8) When the transcript from this hearing is posted I will provide it as well and then everyone can read for themselves the testimony of the witnesses and the unanswered questions put forward by the Commissioners for which undertakings to provide the answers in 2 weeks was ordered.
The station renewal was obtained with a fraudulent claim of compliance with the required governance structure and a false list of Directors. It was never in compliance with the music elements. There were no enrolled students which was the whole purpose of the licence being issued. There were no "members" of the non-profit beyond the person running the operation which means it was a sole proprietorship and therefore illegal. There was no Board to take complaints or concerns to. There was no Board to approve the deal with Eddie Blake but money was accepted anyways. People were threatened for speaking out. Much of the paperwork transferring control to Asper's group is undated, backdated and not initialed. One employee still holds a court order for $5000 in wages and has not been paid despite the claim the new group will "make things right". All facts accepted by the CRTC.
edit: I just spotted the stuff about "coaching" the group and patting them on the back. Maybe someone mistook me for their lawyer David Kovnats, because I had nothing to do with their testimony whatsoever and was not there at the end of their presentation to pat them on the back.
It takes a big man, fan, to hide behind baseless accusations with a pseudonym. "coaching?" - You watch too much, or maybe too little, Law & Order. Frank and Flava were bigger scams than ABC. None of which have any redeeming quality whatsoever. I remember seeing an ABC ad in the Saturday Freep Careers section, congratulating a broadcast student on graduating and her new job as ABC RECEPTIONIST! That sealed the deal for me.
Hip Hop isn't commercially viable in any way shape or form in this city, beyond the grassroots/indie level.
I went to CreCom, my friend went to ABC (it was Robertson at the time). I started landing positions here in Winnipeg before I finished. It took her 5 years to work her way UP to Sudbury. It doesn't matter where you start. The difference is that the smaller the market/station the more hands on experience you will get, and the faster you will climb the ladder when you end up in a bigger market.
