    Well, nostalgia maybe.

I had some sleuthing to do that took me out to my birthplace of St. James, Manitoba so I thought I would snap a few pics. One thing I noticed was that Mr. Long Tramp, his cigar and kerchiefed belongings are up for sale !

I did some snooping and the original building is from 1922 with the back addition added in 1965. The sign was to remind people that it was the last drugstore until you hit PlaP.

This guy is actually the third incarnation of the tramp, The original one was done in the 20's, again in the 50s and the 70's. The murals of Winnipeg website has a neat writeup and a few old pics of the original tramps:

Hope whoever buys it keeps the sign. That sign should be made a protected heritage sign, so that if someone was to tear down the building the sign could be saved to be incorporated into the new building.

Mr C........when I was downtown today I thought of the pictures that you take. Not trying to tell ya what to do but a neat idea would be to take pictures of all the old advertising painted onto the sides of the downtown buildings.....they're fading fast and a piece of WPG history will be lost.

Well, as a matter of fact...that's what got me started in all of this. I feel the same way and have an album of them on my flickr page. Still have a couple of dozen to sort into it - I'll do that tonight.

Weather is taking its toll and so are graffiti folks. It seems to be the latest "urban artiste" thing to do to get on the roof of a building and paint over them or part of them.

WOW MR C!! I tip my cap to you, beautiful pics in that album........more then half I had never seen before, so faded I guess I missed them. Mind if I tell you a few that were missing? The nutty club sign on the candy companies buildings in the west exchange, the Canadian Overall Company sign in the exchange, The Brown and Rutherford Mill on Higgins has a huge "SilPit" sign on the wall. Now get busy preserving history!!! hehe, job well done!!

Great, I will get those. I know the B and R one you are talking about !
  5.
Thanks, I've uploaded another couple of dozen. Next step is to fill in the locations.

MR C.........scratch the Canadian Overall Company sign I told you about, you beat me to the punch in that last batch of photos! I'm willing to bet theres some great ones buried under building add ons and paint!

I always try to snoop around when a building is coming down. When they were tearing down the buildings on Broadway for the expansion to the Nygaard store I found the Sherbrooke Meats one.

Mr C.......I have come to the conclusion you need new glasses!! Hehe. I took a little lunchtime walk today and found a few more for you, including 2 mysteries for you to tackle.
#1 Thomas and Company, wholesalers of boots, shoes and rubbers.Corner of Princess and Noter Dame in the back lane, nice big sign.
#2 Canadian Garment Co. Bannatyne and Adelaide, right next to the Kelly House. Very very faded, building undergoing extensive renovations, better hurry on this one!
#3 Yellow Warehouse. North Main by the underpass.
    heres the mysteries.....
#4 In back of the Fairchild Building on Princess and Bannatyne is half of a painted sign. It says "Robinson", the rest is painted over or completely faded. Could it have been the original home of Robinson Lighting?
#5 Gen?ers Furniture Warehouse on William, you can see the sign from Adelaide/ Bannatyne corner. The middle letter is missing in the painted sign...... was it Genters? Gensers?
I'm a big history buff and love this kind of thing, I hope ya don't mind the extra set of eyes:)

My grandfather worked for Silpit when he first immigrated to Winnipeg in the 50s.

Silpit was a huge huge business........up until I saw the sign on the B&R Mill I thought they were strictly in the clothing business, not so I guess. I think they are still around in some form or another but not nearly like they once were.

No, Eastsider, the more eyes the better. I know there's still a lot to capture and I am slowly plugging away at it. Tips are always welcome. Robinson could be lighting or Robinson's Warehouse. Their stores were just called Robinson's.

My favourite was this one. It's on a horrible building next to the King's Hotel at Waterfront and Higgins. There was something covering the sign and one night I was driving home and the plywood was gone and this sign was there. A couple of days later I went to snap it in the daylight and it was gone !

Check out Sutherland along the CP tracks between Main Street and the SR Bridge. Lots of signs on old warehouse buildings.
