Yes plus my old one got fixed ! <br> <br> I went and bought the newest version of my camera as I found it on sale. The other one was a long shot as to whether it would be fixed under warrantee or not and they said 4 weeks is the average time for repairs. Lo and behold I got a call saying that my old one is ready and fixed for free on Friday! I figure I will use the new one which has a bigger screen, better flash etc. for regular use and the old one for when I go camping or down a back lane in a sketchy area at 2 am to take a pic ! My "beater cam"
good shots sb ! Ahhh, the beachcomber....the don't decorate them like that anymore !<br> <br> <img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2402/2538191788_5513cbd2a8.jpg?v=0">
I started to notice these panels in different locations all over the city. They are from the Crescent Furniture Building, or Sterling Building, it lived until 1985, and gave itself up for the grandeur of Portage Place. Corner of Portage and Vaughan. The City has two plaques up, one at Pantages, the other at Old Market Square. Portage Place itself was deemed worthy of having a few panels installed, one on the front of Portage, the other above the car exit on the East side, facing Air Canada Park. The other panels are at CityPlace, and the RWB Wall.
I guess someone noticed the panels and thought them worthy of keeping, but why wouldn't they just incorporate the outside structure into Portage Place? If anyone can find a picture of the building, please post! I should have paid more attention, youth is wasted on the young.
I have looked and, well, no luck so far. It's really hard to find "the way they were" pics of that part of Portage. Complicated by the fact that there is a Sterling building already on Portage. If you keep looking and find more shards maybe we can go piece them together and rebuild the facades ourselves !!
Even in some of my old books I am having a problem though I did find this beaut ! Portage and Sherbrook, south side. Where the McDonald's is now (a car lot before that).<br> <br> <img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/2641033169_1d4967a3bc.jpg?v=0">
AHA...found it in the Portage Avenue Book. It was the Scientific (Sterling) Building. Renamed in the 40's when the Scientific Beauty and Culture School took it over. It hosted Solar News and the original Rae and Gerry's. From Siamnadas' page:<I>"And the decorative tiles in Old Market Square stage came from the old Scientific Building that had housed Shainos in the 1970s, now site of Portage Place. Other tiles from this building are used at the Forks, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Building Residence, the serpentine wall of Pantages Theatre and even in Eaton Place."</I>. He has a list of other salvaged remnants of buildings used around the city: http://winnipegtimemachine.blogspot.com/2007/01/salvaging-winnipegs-architectural.html <br> <br> Can't find an online pic. Must sleep. Will upload from the book tomorrow...
Copyright gods forgive me....It's from here: <a href="http://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/product.php?txtProdID=372287"> GOING DOWNTOWN A History of Winnipeg's Portage Avenue</a> Really, every Winnipegger should own it and he should be put on a retainer by the city for the rest of his natural life to do for every major street in town !) <br> <img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3182/2641115723_29312da3e9.jpg?v=0 "> <br> <br>Best I can do - I can't scan it because it's in the crease (the building isn't curved - that's the crease again !).
Wow, and I was around for this, can't believe I never noticed! What year was the book printed, and who is the publisher? Must be some color photos around too. thanks for the digging!
OOps, I will click on the link next time. I've been meaning to pick that book up! Is that the YMCA then in top left, must be. That could have been the storefront of Staples, I'm sure they wouldn't have minded.
And more building fragments.. this is making my angry! As Marvin the Martian would say" You have made me very angry - very angry indeed!"
After discovering this building was knocked down for Winnipeg Square, and that some of the fragments are in the Commodity Exchange tower, I finally realized what is in front of the HMCS Chippewa building at Navy Way, right by the Bus Stop. Who the #$#$% is taking care of these? Whose responsibility? They are now being destroyed, one plexiglass cover is gone, the other is cracked.
