    Thanks for the post ExPat!

While I 110% support taking over and renovating the historic building, I can't help but say WTF re: the jebus cross on the top? (Now I know nothing about the Church of Scientology, but I would have assumed no such symbol) That being said, thank goodness it isn't a huge mural like the one in Transcona.

I also wonder what they would have thought about taking over the former Masonic Temple down the road. Anyone know more about the CoS?

Scientologists hang out on the corner of river and osborne sometimes as well. Been setup in the city for a long time and they somehow keep getting more recruits. It's great how many terms in that religion are trademarked.

More great news for the Exchange! (So that means someone is replacing the Liberty Grill)

    http://winnipegfreepress.com/subscriber/business/local/story/4151503p-4740566c.html

An upscale restaurant and lounge is slated to open this spring on the main floor of the Craig Wireless Building at 177 Lombard.

That's just a few steps away from two other upscale drinking and dining establishments -- Hy's Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar on the ground floor of the Richardson Building at 1 Lombard, and Bailey's Restaurant and Bar at 185 Lombard.

Add to the mix the recently-opened Birk's jewelry store at the corner of Lombard and Main Street, and Lombard is starting to become synonymous with high-end retailing in much the same way London, England's Savile Row has become known for its ritzy men's clothing shops.

OK, that's more than a little exaggeration, but it's still good news. I always liked those venues, and I'm glad to see they are having new life breathed into them.

The only inexplicably vacant spaces that need to be filled around there are the old Pockets/Coyote Club, and the old Phat Daddy's. It would be great to see the latter get renovated top to bottom. (Didn't the mayor own that building at one time?)

Savile Row??? A wee bit of hyperbole there. Yes, it's good news but let's keep it in perspective.

Good news - there ARE plans for the old Masonic Temple!

    http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/story/4158659p-4745994c.html

Winnipeg's former Masonic Temple is gearing up for a radical overhaul, with plans for a full-height glass atrium, loft-style apartments and office and retail space.

The gutted three-storey that once housed Mother Tucker's Restaurant has been empty for years, but its new tenants expect to move in as soon as restorations are complete.

"We hope to be in there before the end of the year," said Dan Wolfrom, whose Wolfrom Engineering firm's dozen or so employees will occupy the second floor.

Nice. The article also mentions discussions with a sporting-goods retailer...that's interesting.

I'm glad to see this space get creatively reused. Engineers and architects have been real urban heroes lately, with Bridgman singlehandedly mounting a grassroots revitalization of Higgins & Main, and now this.

Anyway, this gives hope that other nonconventional buildings like the First Church of Christ Scientist on River Avenue might also get similarly redeveloped.

A location of Coast Mountain Sports might be suitable for the location. However it might be hard to compete with MEC around the corner.

Coast Mountain Sports has a wee shop in Calgary, right across the street from MEC. I think the two would work nicely together...although that location would be quite small.

Not too sure what to make of the artist's rendering of the new place.

The floating glass bit is strange, but acceptable. Are the grey angled lines supposed to be shadow?

I usually visit that Coast location when I am at MEC as it carries the other "brand name" stuff while MEC generally carries their own stuff.

However, MEC is now starting to carry other brands so I wonder how long that Coast will last. Especially now that the quality of The North Face quality has declined over the past couple of years.

I would hope that those are supposed to be shadows.

Seems dumb that the rendering would be done with the shadows contradicting the shadows cast on the street and the fact that the north side of the building is still dark. Must be a newbie architect.

Also since when was the sun ever on the north side of that building.

Is the main level of that building big enough for Coast Mountain Sports? Those stores are usually of a pretty decent size. It would seem to me to be a more natural fit for the old A&B Sound building.

That is an interesting looking "attachment" to the building. It looks like it going to be right above the sidewalk...that's certainly different. If this goes ahead, that means that the east side of that block will have had an overhaul. Now to see some improvement on the west side...

Hmm....maybe the shadows are supposed to emphasize how far the glass attachment (good name cb) is supposed to stick out?

Hopefully they'll come up with some better drawings. Not too sure how it fits in with this description:
The future tenant and owner is planning a modern take for the Donald Street site, with a huge atrium on one side and a glassed-in box on the other, projecting over Ellice Avenue.

"We're going to open up that building and extend it out to the street, and include the streetscape with it, so that it's more part of the neighbourhood," he said.
Bottom line, I'm glad someone is moving ahead with the building, keeping it intact.

    looks dumb.

The glass box seems a little silly. What's the point?

And yeah, the rendering is atrocious.
  4.
...but, the idea is way cool dudes... Great building. Interesting footprint for a condo. Watch out for some new friends scuttling the idea.

has anyone ever discussed or considered making the exchange a tax free renaissance zone....you can read about it here.

    http://www.thevillagetc.com/investor.html

apparently it's very popular in the states where cities are trying to revitalize historical areas in the core
